7-Run Ninth Inning Wins
Sunday's Game 1
Morehead City took ends of a
two-game series With Swansboro
oVer the weekend to climb over
their vanquished foes and claim
undisputed title to first place in
the Tidewater League. Morehead
took Saturday's game at Swans
boro by a 9-7 count, and then re
turned home to win, 9-8, in Sun
day's encounter.' In both cases the
victors had to come from behind
in the late innings to win.
In Saturday's game, Morehead
City tallied three times in the
ninth inning to eliraate a 7 6 dis
advantage and to put the game on
ice for the visitors.
Jim Piner started on the mound
for Morehead, but was replaced by
Morton and later Jim Webb, who
got credit for the win. Jones went
all the way for Swansboro and was
charged with the loss.
Smith, Gardner, and Freeman
led Morehead's offensive, each col
lecting two hits for five at bats.
Cobb of Swansboro had a three-for
four record at the plate. .
Sunday's game was something
onp sees in the movies only. For
eight innings, pitcher Bob McNeill
had the Morehead batters stymied.
Going into the ninth frame, Swans
boro was leading, 8 1.
Then, bingo! Morehead rallied
and pushed seven runs across in
the last half of the ninth inning
to tie up the ball game and send
it into extra innings. Morehead
clinched the victory in the lust
half of the enth by scoring another
run.
This is how Morehead City won
the gane. McNeill had been roll
ing merrily along for eight innings,
allowing but two hits and one 'run,
which was unearned. It was scor
ed on an infield error and a triple
by Stoy. In the meantime, Swans
boro, aided by a shakey Morehead
defense, pecked away at pitcher
Jim Webb for eight runs.
In the ninth, after Gardner
grounded out, Bcane struck out but
reached first when the catcher
dropped the ball. Sadler and
Smith singled to bring in one run
and to put runners on first and
second. At this point, manager
"Pappy" Diem took over the pitch
ing chores.
Diem walked pinch-hitter Mal
fus, and Balazzo was sent in to run
for Malfus. Cagle also walked, forc
ing in a run, and on a wild pick-off
throw by catcher Stanley, Smith
scored ond the runners advanced.
Webb fanned for the second out
of the inning, but before he did,
Malfus scored and Cagle took third
on a wild pitch bv Diem.
With the score 8 5, Diem pro
crded to give free passes to both
Stillway and Stoy, loading the
sacks. Diem then retired in favor
of Bill Holt, who came in from his
shortstop position to pitch.
Gardner greeted Holt with a
long double into left-centerficld,
clearing the bases and knotting the
score at 8-8. Bcane then hit back
to the mound to end the inning.
A single by Tinnrv, sandwiched
in between walks to Smith and
Cagle, filled the bases for More
head City in the tenth session.
Webb then won his own ball game
with a base knock into centorfield.
Webb, in earning credit for the
victory, came within one whiff of
lying his. own Tidewater League
record of 17 strike outs.
For Swansboro, Holt was charg
ed with the loss. Seven walks by

The Beard, who currently is
guiding the destinies of former
fighter Tony Galento in the wrest
ling business, claims the combat
ants never know who is to win
any particular event.
Wait a second, now, and give
Willie a chance to explain before
you blow your topper.
"The wrostlrrs are sent to vari

agency," he says. "The; get post

never knows his opponent until he
meets him in the locker room, and
then the pair is merely told to put
on a good show by the equivalent
of a stage director."
Willie says the wrestlers like
to make the public happy because
they work on a percentage of the

pearances the customers will-re-'urn
if their earlier shows have
been up to snuff, says Willie.
