'. ? i "'A 30 Boais in All 5 Classes 1 Expected 16 Enter; Races Will Begin 2:30 p.m. ' '- '' ' The 91st annual Fourth of July sailboat races, sponsored by the Morehead City Sailing Club, will start Sunday afternoon 2:80 p.m. from the sailing club dock at the foot of South 8th street. D. G. Bell, in charge of the races, said yesterday that there will hp rnmnptitinn. in five differ ent classes. These include the 12 to 14 foot class, 16 to 18 foot class, comets, handicap with 18 to 22 footers, and dead rise skiffs in the 18 to 22 foot class. Registration of entrants in the rarps will tnke olace 1 B.rrt. tonight at the club dock and again Sunday from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Bell expects that 30 boats in all classes will enter the regatta. All races will start and finish at the 8th street dock and the boats will race along the Morehead Citv waterfront. The exact course of the races will be determined by the wind on Sunday. Bell requested that members of the Sailing Club and those plan ning to race be at the dock tonight in order to discuss the races. Following the Fourth of July races there will be regular Sun day races each week throughout the summer with a grand finale on Labor Day. Fourth of July races have boon a regular annual feature in the Morehead City area since the first one was held back in 1857. This was the same year that John M. Morehead founded the land deve lopment on Shepard's Point which was eventually to become a city bearing his name. Each Fourth of JUly Since 1857 races have been held in Morehead and this year will be the 91st event held on that date. Mill Creek put the game in the bag by scoring nine runs in the fourth inning, after which they were never headed. N. Culpepper started for Mill Creek, but was re lieved by Monroe in the eighth in ning. Sewell started for Bogue and was charged with the defeat. La Croix relieved him in the big fourth inning. Monroe with 4-for5 and Culpep per with 3 for-5 were the winners' leading batters. ' Bell, with two hits in as many times at the plate, and L. Camp bell, with two hits in four times at bat, topped the Bogue offense. This was the only game played in the Salt Water League ever the weekend. The construction began Tuesday. Plans for the new roof had been curtailed for several weeks because of the lack of lumber. Mrs. Eudy said that the ways and means committee is searching for volunteers to wait on the car penters in order that the work might be speeded and the roof finished by Sunday in time for Beaufort's game with Morehead City and Wednesday's Tidewater League all-star came. Completion of the roof will cli max a series of improvements at the ball park for which the ways and means committee has been res ponsible. These improvements have been financed in large part through donations. The committee has also taken over the concessions at the park and receives all the profits from those activities. It sponsors the team and receives 10 percent of the gate at the games. Jean Fodrie Heads Girls' Rec Program in Beaufort Miss Jenn Fodrio, recently ap pointed in charge of the girls of the City Recreation Program In It fan Tort Is expected to give a "big boost" lo the program. Miss Fodrie is a physical edu cation major at East Carolina Teachers College and will gra duate next fall. During the past week the girls have been active in softbnll, tennis and swimming. C., July 1 Ocracoke's ''Nine Old Men" extended their winning streak to three straight victories Sunday by edging out the Coast. Guard, 7 to 6, in a softball game. Going shead 2 to 1 in the second inning, the Coast Guard held and increased their lead until the fifth Inning when the "Nine Old Men" came up trailing 5 to 2. Then the "Nine Old Men" began hitting.
