LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
THE NEWS-TIMES , ,
Morehead City, N. C.
Dear Sir:
'This isn't Just a letter, it's a
story more or less, probably less.
I'm calling this "Where Dreams
Come True."
Ever hear of Harker's Island, N.
C.7 ' '
I suppose very few people have,
outside of Carteret County. But
around that territory people know
us and know us well. Maybe some
times those things' aren't Just what
they should be and are not as
truthful as they should be. But
nevertheless we lust take it in our
stride fs we do everything else.
People seem to take a shine to
that nlace and it's growing, grow
ing fast. I suppose there are a
score of summer homes already
built there with more people build
ing there all the time. Some of
them are year-round while othe-s
are just for a few weeks in the
summer, but the people who have
been there always return and i
usually bring friends and relatives ,

there. HUH??? The nonulation is
IIC. OU, MV aw,.. o
now around 1,200 compared to 1,
000 in 1940.
In 1939 Electric Power was put
to the Island by way of Lennox
ville, which was later rerouted.
That was just like turning on a
100 watt bulb in a dark room
Well, it was! The batterv radios
kerosene lamps and lanterns wre
done away with and replacrd by
bulbs. Ali those dark corners 'hat
h'd pover sorn licht before were
all lighted up. Probably in sonv
ca.se, inty i
never knew existed bur hey were
lighted just the same and we ell
neht m with the res of the world
with no strain "t all.
Electric, v is a . wond r ul thins
ll liinrfc- th'lf ItA
M Junior' Chamber Cornme
is aniicipating putting some of that
electricity to use by nutting a cau-1
tion lieht at the intersection of the ,
main highway and the Post Office I
road. This will be a very good .
thing because, just as likely as not
when vou're drivin" east or west I
on the main highway, some local
racingminded scalawag of about
twelve years of age, or some of
our nearby out-oftowners will
come slipping, sliding and hell
bent forelection out of the Post
Office road: scaring you half to
death, driving you through some-1
one's fence and into their yard, I
and go on his merry wav as if ,
nothing had ever happened, uz
course this doesn't happen every
time vou Bo bv this particular
place and It may never happen to
you, but don t do surprised u u
does. Just, take it easy going Dy
there and you'll probably come out
OK. hundreds of us do everydav.
Where was I anyway, boiorc i
got the J. C.s on me? Oh yes.
In January 1941 we got our long
awaited for bridge. Naturally it
was not where the people who use
it wanted it, but instead it was
where a few of our Carteret Coun
ty not-so-clean politicians wanted
it. But nevertheless we got our:
bridge. We could ride a fine grue-1
some, backbreaking, sure death for i
an automobile dirt and clay road j
to U. S. highway 70, where in turn
we can ride the 14 or 15 miles
to nearbv Beaufort, which is about
six actual miles. The amount that ,
was spent in repairing and replac- j
ie automobiles: hnving gsnline. I
tires and bus tickets could have
put a bridge just where we wanted
it before we finally sot a hard
surfaced road.
Going back a little before- we got
the electricity and the bridge ifl
1938 I believe it was, we got a
sidewalk in, of all places, the mid
dle of our Oystershell road. Of
course, not many towns in this
territory can boast of a sidewalk
as wide as ours. It's so wide we
have to use it for our street, we
have to since they put it in the
middle of our shell road. This
makes driving on the Island just
a bit complicated. If you're a very
good driver and are going at a
slow enough rate of speed you
can keep all four wheels on it at
once. When you meet another
car, then, it's up to you to do as
you please. I suggest that when
you start over there for a spin on
Sunday afternoon, or whenever
vou are going, that you break out
the biggest car you have, so you
can lust push the smaller cars and
the people off the ro , ho, SIDE
WALK! We don't mind it. We're
ised to being pushed around, but I
lon't think it'll be that way very
much longer.
It's a nice place though, and
you'll like it, even if , you don't
want to admit it. You'll be, glad
to someday.
You can find most anything yon
want here too. 1 believe we have
eleven stores where you can find
anything from Sardines to Horse
collars, a cafe where you can get
good steaks and seafoods, a hotel
which also has a dining room, five
churches of different denomina
tions, and a theater. There are
also a number of different boats
or hire 1 r charter fishing. You
can try Sound fishing or take a
shot at the blue Atlantic where
the big ones bite. '
Oh ves!! As you're' driving in
about the middle of the Island,
you'll see a long brown thing. The
first thing that you'll probably
think is. "That's the school build
ing." That's what we use to think
too, so that's what we've been
using it for. for years. Just how
many years I couldn't My. Now
we're beginning to , wonder t why
we can't have a school instead of
that. . . . whatever it is. But' tt
seems that the people who have
the say so about it think that we,
have enough for us. They say we
dont vote right. Well as I remem
ber the children that are of the
age to go to school are not allow
ed to vote, and they are the ones
who have to go to the beat up
place, not the older ones, and they
should have a decent place to go
to school ai any other children.
Oh well, it's still "The Land
Where Dreams Come True."
