Literary Guidepost 'The Naked and the Dead' Shows Doubters That War Isn't Glamorous Bv W. f'. Roeers THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, bv Norman Mailer (Rhinehart; $4) These 721 pages about the cap ture of the island of Anopopei by our army under Gen. Cummings from the Japs undr Gen. Toyaku are "must" reading for those who think, one, that war is glamorous, or two, that there's something ro mantic about a man in uniform, or three, that the answer to any pro blem is another world war. You have heard of this young author before, perhaps in "Cross Section 1944" where he was re presented by a novelette presaging the form of this big work, or in "Cross Section 1948" where one ot the incidents in this travel was first printed. Here on a vast can vas he fulfills the early bright pro mise, he creates a complete war time world in miniature, appor tions life and death among his hapless characters, and even runs his own little war. There is an appalling confusion of loyalties and disloyalties, ten derness and brutality, love and lust.. Mailer has a keen err for Bound efects, a sharp eye for the looks of a iungle or a firing line, pnd the. ability to ;aint a scene in vivid colors.
