OLIVE LONGEST Deputy Collector 4t J. 16 20-23 27 Less Sand in Fertilizer Assured By Grade Lists RALEIGH, There will be a whole lot less sand in fertilizers sold in North Carolina in the com ing crop year. This will be the result of remov al from the fertilizer grade list of two old familiar but uneconomical formulas 3-8-5 and 4 8 8. The former for many years was a po pular grade with tobacco farmers and the latter was widely used for general crops, especially corn. They were cheap in price, but ex pensive in use, for 3 8-5 carried 520 pounds of said to the ton and 4 8-8 had nearly 400 pounds. The fertilizer lndusfry itself joined with agronomists in recom mending that these two grades no longer be registered for sale in North Carolina. To take the nlacs of 4-8-8 they recommended 5-10-10. containing the same proportionate parts of essential ingredients In a higher ratio. Accepting these recommenda tions, the State Board of Agricul ture recently adopted a fertilizer grade list of 24 mixtures for 1948 49. as follows: For tobacco only 2-10 8, 3-9-6 4-93, 69-3, 5-5-20 (top-dresser). For tobacco and general crops 3-9-9, 4 12 8. For general crops 0-12-12. 0-10-20, 09-27, 014 7, 2 12-12, 3 9-12, 3 12-6, 4-10-6, 4-12-4, 5-10-5. 510 10, 6 6-12. 6-8-6. 7-7-7, 10-6-4, 14-0-14 (top-dresser), 10-0-30 (top dresser). Boy vs Policemen CHAMPAIGN, III. (AP) Five year old John Taylor Win low's release from the police sta tion was a relief to policemen. Johnny showed up one afternoon plodding along in cowboy boots. He was obviously lost but made himself at home at police head quarters. He emptied all 28 private mail boxes of police officers, broke the hyrdometer used to measure the sufficiency of antifreeze in squad cars, and hung by his heels from the radio wires under the radio desk. One of h exnlnratorv trips, however, took him into a jail cell and he swung the heavy steel door shut behind him. There he stayed until bii mother arrived. Mer Ues Auto Capitol DETROIT The rear-engine Tucker invaded the automobile capitol recently for the first show ing of its production model sche duled to roll off lines in the Chi cago automobile plant this sum mer. Detroit newsmen, who have fol lowed the Corporation's develop ment since operations were moved to Chicago, were the first to see Tucker's new automatic transmis son which company engineers claim is the greatest single advance in the field over the past 10 years. Demonstrated in the private showing on the outskirts of Detroit were two complete cars and a chas sis equipped with the new trans mission, which combines charac teristics of current torque conver ters and automatic transmissions to provide continuous, variable speed through use of fluid -couplings and a controlled planetary gear train. "This transmission represents an entirely new approach," said Warren Rice, engineer in charge of the transmission development program. "We have eliminated many of the complications inherent to the automatic transmissions, and achieved in some ways sur passed torque converter perform ance without the many precision parts that makes this tvne of trans mission so costly to produce." Rice said the dash control has onlv three positions forward, neu tral and reverse and the design provides all the torque needed under all conditions without the additional "low" position added for emergency pnwr in current automatic transmissions. "Our uni( has no heat exchang er, because we haven't encounter ed excessive heat." Rice said. "The highest temnerature we have re gistered tinder th" most severe conditions is 225 drgreps F.. and we can stnnd up to 350 degrees before we meet any difficulty." To demonstrate efficiency of the unit, the chassis had both a speed ometer and tachometer mounted on the instrument panel. In road tests? the Tucker reached a road speed of 100 mnh at 3000rnm, com pared with 5100 and 5300 rpm respectively for two other stock ears in comparable speed and horsepower ranges. From idling speed, the Tucker engine was brought up and held to 1500 rpm. and the chassis reached 50 mph within less than 600 feet. An exclusive feature that will be included in the production lab, is an anticreeo brake which operates automatically to hold the output shaft in th transmission at idling speed. This mechanism operates on a separate hydraulic circuit. "Cars with this transmission will 'push start' at 10 miles per hour," said Rice. "We tested other ears at the same time, under identical ronditions and temperatures, and they required from 23 to 31 miles per hour to turn the engine over." Automotive writers who rode in the cars and drove the chassis found essentially the same features that were promised when the Tucker was first announced, in cluding the 166 horsepower op posed liauid-cooled six cylinder en gine in the rear, hydraulic trans mission of power from enine to wheels and a crash pad and safety compartment in the front passen ger section. "We found some changes neces sary from original plans as our production model was devploned chiefly in the interest of holding down production cost to compete In the medium price -class," said E. Offutt, chief engineer. "Our first series will have drum brakes. We had an efficient disc brake in the beginning, but we found it too costly to produce in a stock car. We are testing an other design that looks prom'sine frm a production standpoint. nd if it proves satisfactory and isn't too expensive to build we will put it in the next series." The present model use s'nple rarburetor. but Offutt said fuel in jection is planned later as national eonioment. The only noticeable change from the original desn was incorporating a differential in stead of using two torque conver ters "We built torque converters thai worked, but found they nded further development to achive aeeeptble efficiency and at the sam time hold manufacturing oosl withih reasonable limits," Offutt said. "W in th 'nijiner'ni' Heprt- ment believe this automobile will ou'-perform any stock car built today, and it has important fea tures that no Other manufacturer offers in any price range. "Our most imoortant contribu tion, in our opinion, is increased safety, not only in design and con struction of the body, but also in weight distribution for better hand ling and safer stopping in emer gencies." The engine, , transmission and differential are a single unit that Tucker engineers say can be taken out by competent mechanics in half an hour without special tools. The engine is less than half the weight of standard automobile en gines of comparable power and performance. This is the automobile. You are going to see a lot more of them on the road before the year to over." EUEuET (Continued From Page One) debt service fund was "in good order." On the following questions raised at June's commission meeting George McNeill, town attorney, gave this report: Speeding on waterfront the harbor master of the port com mission has the authority to make rules regulating speed of boats on the Morehead City waterfront ra ther than' the mayor. At this point the question, "Who's the harbor master?" was raised but not ans wered. Town docks The town has no right to lease docks exclusively to one individual because docks are street ends and are available for use of the public. TANKER (Continued From Page One) for their imagination to fill in. The general attitude of the men was one of a group of tourists. Nevertheless, they seemed impa tient to get home and expressed he belief and hope that the boat would leave that night. With an air of contentment, the ngent, who makes his home in Wil mington, leaned back in his chair is the interview concluded and remarked with a chuckle, "You might add that a pleasant trip was enjoyed by all." Although the interview turned out to be a very entertaining one, I'd still like to know just how big that ship was. Most so-called Panama hats are made in Ecuador.
