Barrow managed the Boston Red Sox from 1918 through 1920 and was familiar with Ruth's antics off the field. One night when the team visited Washington, Barrow stayed up all night to catch Ruth breaking training rules. At six a.m. Barrow stormed into Ruth's room to find Babe smoking a pipe with the bed covers up to his neck. "I've been here all night," Ruth said. "I like to smoke this early every morning." Plans Completed This Week For Tar Heels Afloat Cruise Plans for the first m;iss cruise of Tar Heels Afloat, an organiza tion made up of pleasure craft owners in North Carolina, were bv ing completed this week, according to Cruise Commodore Charles N. Bennett. He stated that approximately SO pleasure craft owners, including yachts and cruisers ranging from 30 to 70 feet in length, had indi cated they would take part in the event. First section of the flotilla will be underway at 10 o'clock on Sun day morning with the upper reach es of Trent river, a tributary of the Neuse, as the destination. Second squadron of the flotilla made up of speedier vessels, will depart from Morehead City Yacht Basin about noon. The cruise un Adams creek (in land waterway) and the Neuse is so timed that the ereat mass of pleasure boats will arrive in New Bern's historic harbor simultane ously during mid afternoon. Here the great fleet will be pho tographed from the air by Theo dore Baxter. From New Bern the flotilla will proceed up the Trent river with some of the craft going to Pollocksville before returning to Trent I'incs club and the East Carolina Yacht club anchorage for an overnight stop. A banquet will be served the owners and guesTs at Trent Fine club that evening with Fred Miles as host. Lavish entertainment is planned by Col. A. T. Willis, Com modore of the East Carolina Yacht club and his associates for the visit ing yachtsmen. On Monday morning the flotilla will return to Morehead City ar riving Labor Day afternoon. Wednesday the Fire Department won, 64, from the Jaycees nt Wade Brothers Park and the Ileauloil Oddfellows returned to winning ways bv topping Tide Water, 11-2. in Beaufort. The troops have not been meet ing since the ban on children con gregating due to the polio epi demic. Scouts in the county at present number approximately 130. The new troop in Beaufort, No. 222, in charge of Robert (Bobby) Stephens and John Duncan, will receive its charter in several weeks. Committeemen who attended the meeting were James D. Pot ter, chairman, N. F. Eure, Ben F. Copeland, all of Beaufort, W. C. Wall, New Bern. Clyde Jones and W, C. Carlton, Morehead City. The next meeting will be held the latter part of September.
