Charles Hassell reported that a zoning effort eight years ago met with a great deal of opposition. President Wheatly expressed his belief that most of the opposition which existed then does not exist now. In answer to a query from a club member, it was stated that the town commissioners have suf ficient authority to make a zoning ordinance law. Thomas Ennett, county health officer, announced yester day that there will he a meeting . ,of the county board of health at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the health office in Beaufort to discuss the possibility of opening schools earlier than the tenta tive Oct. 1 date set several weeks ago. The board of education has been invited to attend. of the town to enact such a law. In the discussion of the proposed town limits extension, it was held that present off limits residents affected would receive the follow ing benefits: fire protection, police protection, garbage disposal, and reduction of fire insurance rates. The bone of contention, it was stated, might be increased taxes. Mr. Whcatley maintained that re sidents now outside of the town limits "would save enough on in surance rates alone to pay the in creased taxes." Costs of the limits extension to the town, it was held, would be the yearly rental fee for perhaps five additional fire hydrants ($30 apiece from Tidewater Light and Power Co.) and the cost of extrr. garbage disposal facilities. It was felt that no increase in police per sonnel or facilities would be re quired.
