Ed Smithwick of ML Olive, Lee Smithwick of Belhaven, Cleveland and McKensey Smithwick, Ponzer; Mrs, Margaret Dunbar of Wfnona; Mrs. Annie Davis of Davis' Shore; Mrs. Carrie Paul of Pike Road; Prices (Continued From Page One) He"eti$haslzed that the reduction applies to potatoes only, and said the move cannot be regarded as a precedent in establishing the gen eral level of price supports under the new farm law. Under the new act, the Secretary of Agriculture is directed to sup port the prices of potatoes, dry beans, dry peas, turkeys, soybeans for oil, peanuts for oil, American Egyptian cotton and sweet pota toes next year at not less than 60 per cent of parity. , ' In general, however, farm sup port prices will be supported through 1949 at 90 per cent of parity. These crops include the so called basic crops wheat, corn, tobacco, rice, peanuts other than for oil,- cotton and tobacco. In 1950, the secretary will have authority to establish flexible sup ports ranging from 60 to 90 per cent of parity, on virtually all ma jor crops except tobacco. In the case of tobacco, the support price is fixed permanently at 90 per cent of parity provided marketing quo tas are in effect. Brannan said he was forced to drop the potato support price be cause of the high losses the gov ernment has incurred in support ing them. He said, however, that he does not think this is the time to be talking about reducing the prices of farm products "without relating that discussion to the many fac tors 'which go into the production of farm commodities." "In fact," his statement con tinued, "at this vsry . time, the costs of things which farmers must buy to carry on their production are higher than they were a year aco. notwithstanding the fact that the prices they receive for their products are generally lower. "If there had been any omer mechanism to attain the sharp ad justment in potato production which is long overdue, I most cer tainly would also have used it. So far this year, the government has bought about 60,500,000 bu shels of potatoes in order to sup port prices, paying an average of about $1.45 a bushel. Actually the government's loss has been greater than the amount it paid to support prices. This is because an effort has been made to put potatoes to useful uses, such as commercial alcohol pro duction. The government has paid the freight on such sales and this has exceeded what it received for the potatoes. The 1949 potato goal of 1,938,000 acres includes 1,223,100 acres for commercial production, with the remainder for non-commercial pro duction (less than 3 acres). The acreage goals by states, in thousands of acres included: Vir ginia 24.0; North Carolina 20.5; South Carolina 7.9; Tennessee 3.8. Potato acreage in Carteret coun ty last year was approimately 1, 600. (Continued From Page One) channels is being maintained. Wallace channel is the only en trance from the ocern to inland waters between Norfolk and Beau fort. , In an effort to force immediate Investigation of this problem, Mr. Walker contacted Sen. J. M. Broughton when efforts to get in touch with Congressman Graham A. Barden failed. . Catches of menhaden this week have been excellent, with all fac tories working full-tilt. On Wed nesday, night one of the boats at a local plant was merely sent out to sea again to wait until the next day to come in because the bail ing crew refused to unload any more fish. ' Calls at other fish plants for bailing crew help brought no re sponse. , All the other crews were tired out too.. Spasmodic failures of electric power In Beaufort this week have been due to adjustments being made In power lines because or the sudden load of current needed at the fish plants. Outtages have occurred three times ' but have been of only 20 minutes' duration, George Stovall, manager of the lo cal Tide Water plant reported. Oil yield on the fatback catches has been above average. Mrs. Bell Squires of Ponzer. A Visit to Mrsi Smithwick is well worth while, but don't go to her home to find her. She is apt to be gijlivanting around visiting some of her eight children for a day or two at the time. Best thing is to go to the postoff ice, which her daughter-in-law keeps, and make inquiry. Sapphires and rubies are basical ly the same time', the difference being only in the color. First on the program were, talks by our principal, Mr. Windell; our coach es, Miss Crosby Page and Mr. Gan non Talbert; our two captains, 71 sie Jane Willis and Buck Matthews. By the way, our captains are both from the senior class, have played four straight years of first string basketball, and are hard to beat.
