timet called "Millionaire's Row,"
because many of the home owners
there are worth seven figures, be
gins this week.
Racing greyhounds created the
fund which will be used to make
the needed street improvements.
After the racing season was over
during the early autumn, the More
head City Racing Commission's
share was something like $27,000
or a 10 percent cut of the proceeds
from this enterprise which intro
duced legalized pari-mutuel betting
in North Carolina.
Of the $27,000 at least $25,000
will be used on the improvement
of Morehead City's Evans Street.
Even if they do not change the
name, they should start calling it
Greyhound Boulevard, in honor of
the fast running dogs which were
responsible for this addition to the
town's treasury. Somebody wise
cracked that next year's cut in the
racetrack take should be used for
repaving Arendell street, and that
its name should be changed then
to "Daily-Double Drive."
Archie Royal tavls, Morehead
City-born architect with offices in
Durham, pave me the dope on the
recreation pier proposed for Mo
ney Island Beach. It will be more
than just an ordinary fishing pier,
according to Davis, and the -owners,
Sportsman's Pier Inc., a corpora
tion headed by E. L. Scott of Kins
ton, plans to spend between $75,
000 and $100,000 on its construc
tion. Already the War Department
has given approval for the pier's
construction. It will be 1,300 feet
long with a 100 x 75 foot "T" at
the offshore end. About midway
of the pier or 500 feet offshore
provisions will be made for a res
taurant. A breakwater, made from
pilings, will be a feature of the
offshore end of the pier to pro
vide facilities of fishing boats. Da
vis says this will be the longest
and most modern recreation pier
on the North Carolina coast and
that it will be ready for business
by summertime, 1949.
F. M. "Coach" Simmons, former
ly of Morehead City who has been
residing in Charlotte for the past
several years was here on a visit
last week. Recently he flew over
to England to attend the Olympic
games. His son was a member of
one of the teams.
On his return to America aboard
plane he struck up a speaking ac
quaintance with one of the pas
sengers who was an Australian re
turning home from a vacation in
the Alps of Switzerland. He asked
Simmons where he was from in
the United States.
"You probably have never heard
of the state I come from. It is
North Carolina, and I am frBHi
Charlotte," Simmons replied.
"Oh, yes!" said his plane com
panion, "I have heard of North
Carolina and as a matter of fact
I was assigned to dutv there early
in the war aboard a British ship."
He was referring to one of the
North Sea armed trawlers which
based at Morehead City during
1942.
"One of the things I remember
about Morehead City is that fa
mous seafood restaurant, where we
always had a meal after coming in
from patrol off Cape Lookout and
Cape Hatteras," he added.
BOARD
(Continued From Page One)
board can lease public property for
a period of 25 years.
Under the lease presented by
Mr. Taylor, the school would have
the use of the ball diamond at all
times and the Athletic associa
tion's activities would in no way
interfere with the school program.
A delegation of men from Davis
appeared before the board and re
quested permission to purchase the
school house at Davis for a com
munity center.
The board told the delegation
that the price would be approxi-!
mately $500. To obtain the build-
ing as a community center, an
organization consisting of a presi
dent, vice-president, secretaryand
treasurer should be set up at Da
vis, Dr. Moore stated.
The Davis citizens, representing
the Woodmen of the World, the
American Legion, and two church
es, reminded the board that a new
roof, costing approximately $1,000
would .have to be' put on the build
ing. The board asked that the dele
gation, including Grady Davis, Joe
Davis, and Lionel Gilgo, return to
the January meeting at which time
they will make a decision as to the
disposal of the Davis ichool house.
H. L. Joslyn, superintendent of
schools, made a report on the
School Board association conven
tion which he recently attended
and also a 'report on the request
for ichool funds from the state for
the next biennium. ; .

halls. . Most students feel they
must keep their room neat so it
will get a good grade but they say,
"Oh, what do I care about the
halls? They aren't graded anyway.
It's no skin off my nose if I throw
a piece of paper down."
Actually I know no one really
says those things but in their sub
conscious mind that's exactly what
they are thinking. Excuse me,
folks, for preaching a sermon but
I hope you will realize what I'm
trying to put across to you. Since
you are in the school building
practically all day why not make
it a clean, pleasant place to stay,
huh?
Last Thursday afternoon we
were shown three pictures in cha
pel: "Nutty Pine Cabin," a comedy
about beavers; "Beautiful Dream
er," a story of Stephen Foster; and
"Game of Games," the 1948 Army
and Navy football game. These
pictures were really nice, much
better than any we had last year.
Before the movies feegan, Mrs.
Lollis, the high school librarian,
talked to the students about the
care of the library. It seems they
aren't taking care of the books as
they should and they are keeping
books out weeks over time. She
said that beginning Monday there
would be a fine for overdue books,
2 cents a day.
On Friday night the nurses are
sponsoring a show at the school
auditorium. It is an all-male show,
"Hollywood Capers," and in it we
have such famous people as Betty
Grable, Rita Hayworth, Carmen
Miranda, etc. I believe it's going
to be a very funny but enjoyable
show. The admission is 35 cents
and 50 cents and everyone is in
vited. t
An "off-lhe-prcss" report on
Morehead's game with Camp Le
jeune was printed last week and
I'm afraid it was exaggerated
quite a good bit. Morehead did
not mean to imply that Beaufort's
basketball team is not good
enough to beat Camp Leicune. In
fact Beaufort has a 50-50 chance
to beat them, just as Morehead
had, even though they do have a
good and a strong team. This re
port, that was published, was said
in a kidding way and was never
meant to be published. We are all
very sorry that this happened and
we really wish Beaufort's team the
very best of luck tonight when
they meet Camp Leieune. I say
this in behalf of our principal,
coach, faculty and student body.
Bye.
