D21p spawns in deep water, possibly as far south as off the coast of Flori da. The eggs sink to the bottom. After several hours they catch. The young are known as nauplii and bear no resemblance to mature shrimp. They are microscopic in size and live a planktonic life, drifting about in the water with currents and tides. They arc dis tributed north and inshore, pro bably by little understood currents. During the time of this migration they moult repeatedly, pass thraugh three separate stages of body torm, none of which resembly mature shrimp. By the time the larvae have reached the less salty waters of the bays, rivers and creeks, they are large enough and properly equipped to live on the bottom. They now bear a resemb lance to mature shrimp and only minor changes in body form occur between post larva and adult. The young shrimp sink to the bottom and adopt the adult mode of life. They grow rapidly, growth being accompanied by movements back toward deeper and more saline waters. It is during this migration that the fishery takes its toll of immature adults. As the shrimp mature, they move seaward and out of the range , of the present commercial fishery. Little is known of the life of the other species; but since they are closely related to the green shrimp, it has been assumed that the life his tories are similar. Shrimp eat almost anything. During the early stages of their life cycle they feed by filtering minute organisms from the water. Later, when they have become bot tom dwellers, they feed on worms, small molluscs, or almost anything they can find. In captivity shrimp have been observed to eat small fish or even other shrimp. In our laboratory we feed them on beef liver and oyster meats. In nature they ingest a considerable amount of mud and probably utilize some r th nrunic debris that litters toe bottom. V Shrimp are a favorite food item of a great many fish, and natural enemies lurk on every hand. Al though no figures are known, it is unreasonable to assume that men eat nearly as many shrimp as do fish: Ecologically, they furnish an important link in the food chain of the sea. The present problems of the tic coast shrimp spawn? What do the developmental stages of the grooved shrimp look like, and where can they be found? How and when do shrimp larvae enter the sounds? How do they manage to stay there when the tide ebbs? How much food does a single shrimp require, and how many shrimp compete for the available food? Where are the favorite nurs cvry grounds for the post larvae? How many shrimp docs a fish eat, and how many fish compete for the supply of shrimp? What happens to the small shrimp when fall comes? What happens to shrimp that have spawned? The question that is of paramount importance to the practical fisherman is: where do the shrimp go when they disappear from the sounds and other known grounds? Although it is generally assumed that shrimp migrate south in the winter months, considerable evidence sup ports the theory that shrimp may be found during the off season in the deeper water of the continental shelf. Whether they occur there in commercial quantities is not I own. The work of the Institute of Fisheries Research is devoted to the solution of problems of this nature. It can do this only with the full support of the fishing industry. The response of the fish ing industry has been gratifying, and the cooperation which the in dividual fishermen and boat own ers have given invaluable. Many of the fishermen have become col lectors for the Institute and have heartily entered into its program of research. Progress is being made in many lines of Investiga tion. The continued cooperation between science and industry will bear fruit. The fruit of this team work will be knowledge knowledge essential to the intelli gent exploitation of our marine re sources. ... ' Morehead's basketball clubs traveled to Alliance Friday night and the girls suffered their second straight defeat, boys winning by a wide margin of 40 points. The girls played a rather slow first half with the Morehead team on the low end of an 11-8 score at the first quarter. At the half the score was 15 up and both teams were getting rather excited. Lena Willis, Morehead guard fouled out in the third quarter which ended in our favor, 24-21. This last quar ter was really something. More head gained one point and Alliance gained six, making them the vic tor, 27 25. Patty Jean Bell scored 13 points, followed by Elsie Willis and Nancy Derrickson who bagged 5 each. Jo Windcll scored the remaining 2 points. Alliance really has a good forward, Paul No. 8, who scored 16 points. Second high was Ireland No. 3, with 5. The boys played a fast-moving but slow scoring game as far as Alliance was concerned. They held up the low end of the score for the entire game but picked up in the last quarter to make more points than they -had in the entire game: Quarter scores were 9-1, 23-3, 34-6, 53-13, all for Morehead. We're certainly proud of our center. Buck Matthews who bagged 8 field goals and 2 free shots, totaling 18 points. Second was Leslie Fcagle who srored 12: following was Steed, 9; Cordova, 5; Bob Matthews, 5; Bell, 2; Ray Lewis, 2.
