Thirty
Years Ago . . .

Some forty years ago the late
J. B. Morton came to Morehead
City from Newport, opening a gen
eral store under the firm's name
of Morton and Webb. This partner
ship continued for several years
until in 1888, Mr. Morton took
over the interests of Mr. Webb,
nnpratinc under his own name for
the next twenty years. ( j
The first store of this firm was
located in the remodeled ice house
which stood on I he plot just west
of the present City Theatre build
ing. Later when the two story brick
building ws erected on the corner
of Arendell and 8th street by the
late D. G. Bell, Mr. Morton, who
at "nt time was the sole owner
of the business, moved his stock
into the new building where he
continued to operate until his re
tirement about 1016.
Mr. Morton occupied the two
store spaces which were connected
by an archway. The corner space
was given over to his stock, of
dress goods, wearing apparel for
all members of the family and
other general merchandise items.
A stairway in this department con
nected with the second floor which
was used for the dinhy and sale
of household furnishings.
The other store space which to
day is occupied by the S. & W,
Drug store, contained the grocery
and hardware departments. Mr.
Morion's trade was not .confined
just to Morehead City for his trade
territory extended for several
miles along the coast. It is said
that one was able to find almost
any article of wearing apparel,
building or boat supplies that was
in use or demand four decades
ago'.
Mr. Morton took an active part
in the civic pffairs of the citv. H
served as president of the Bank
of Morehead City, on the Board of
County Commissioners and lor
fifteen years was active as a mem
ber of the Board of Education
Failing health about 1916 caused
Mr. Morton to close out his busi-

Louisiana State Veterans Bonus.

na bonus: "The Louisiana Depart
ment cf Veterans' Affairs and the
office of Louisiana's Governor,
Earl K. Long, have advised us
that they are. .being flooded with
inquiries concerning the bonus
The director of the Louisiana De
partment of Veterans' Affairs, Jo
seph L. Golsan, has advised vet
erans to 'sit tight' until a method
is set up to pay the $50 to $250
cash bonus provided by the bonus.

concerning the bonus," Johnson
