OAKY Postmaster Cites Progress In American Postal Service As patrons swamped the Morc- lii'ad City post office yesterday with their holiday mailings, Post master Harold Webb found time to recall the continuing progress in United States postal delivery ser vice since the first Christmas c. rds vrre dispatched by Benjamin franklin, father of the American Postal system. Back in those dim, candle-lit days nearly 200 years ago the hear ty colonists were fewer and far ther between than cities arc today, and mailmen were rare pioneers willing to blaze new traits afoot and on horseback over a coropara-1 lively few scattered miles of rug ged terrain encompassing the post routes, Postmaster Webb said. From that inauspicious start I sprung the overland mail as a re I suit of the Cold Rush of !), fol lowed by the Pony Express in 1060, linking east and west with what was the fastest mail delivery the forefathers of that era could conceive. Then came the railway mail service connecting virtually all crossroads of America. The next innovation that has brought this n it ion the world's fastest, modern postal delivery ser vice was the airplane shortly after the turn of the century. Down 'hrough the years air mail facili ties have expanded to such an extent that today it is common place to wing letters and parcels to all parts of the globe. "In this Air Age," added Post master Webb, "the speedier air mail and air parcel post service, which envelopes more than 300,- 000 route miles of domestic and international airways blanketing every sector of the world, is avail able from our city at the lowest rates in history. "When you consider that pat rons may still be assured of their greeting cards and packages being delivered in ample time for Christ mas by the simple expedient of air mail, whether they be going 500 or 5,000 miles, then the progress made in our postal delivery service is nothing short of phenomenal," Postmaster Webb concluded.
