WOtTS IIMITID, MO?IA, ItllHOH THE LITHE .COUNTRY CHURCH Recently a survey was made concerning what rural people expect of their pastors. Of course, not everything that each per son wrote was incorporated in the report, but the most important things were listed. Some of the things rural people like in their pastors are listed below. First of all, they want preachers who u? the Bible as their source of authority; to believe it, preach it. and live it. They want it to be the very breath of life of their sermons. They want preachers who are interested in the children and young people, and who can work with them. They like preachers who visit, not only as social callers, but as pastors interested in their soul's welfare. They think the min isters should visit not only their members, but everyone in the com munity who dues not belong to some other church near by. They want preachers to be interested in every means of af fording people ways ot attending church, even to the extent of helping get as good roads as possible which lead to the churches. They want preachers who do not mind getting their hands dirty in manual labor. They like preachers who are handy with tools, especially when there is a church building program or some other work for the church. They like to see their preacher look after the poor and the unchurched people, especially those who are too poor to afford a church and regular minister. Any rural preacher can meet these and other requirements, but not all the little whims of many of his members. Rev. H. L. Harrell Straits Methodist Charge Sunday School Lesson (Continued from page one) multiplied the nation and not in creased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in har vest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. (4) For thou hast broken the yoke of his bur den, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. (5) For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burn ing and fuel of fire. (6) for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God. The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (7) Of the increase joi his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lofd of hosts will perform this. (1) And th^re shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jes se. and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: (2) And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understand^ ing, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the feA* of the Lord. (3) And shall make him of quick under standing in the fear of the Lord: and lie shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: (4) But with righteousness shall he judge the goor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. (5) And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. No Christmas Night Service Franklin Memorial Methodist church is calling off its Christmas night service this year. Its mem bers are invited to attend the serv ices in the other churches or to enjoy the Christmas season with their families. The pastor expects to go home Christmas afternoon. Confession to Precede High Mass Saturday Father Elmer J. I.andser, T O R , pastor of Saint Egbert's Catholic church. Morehead City, has an nounced that there will be confes sion from 7 until 9 Saturday eve ning. A High Mass. celebrated by Fa ther Elmer will begin at midnight, at which the pstor will preach an appropriate sermon. "The Prince of Peace." Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament will fol low immediately after the High Mass. Low Masses will be cele brated on Christmas Day at 9 and 11 a. m. There will be no confessions im mediately before the High Mass but there will be confessions be fore the two low Masses. A men's choir, under the direc tion of Earl Lillestrand with Joyce Willis at the organ, will sing the High Mass. The men's choir is composed of Donaltl Bloomer. James Pincr, Richard Ryan, Geo. Stafford, and E. R. Patrias. Ushers for the High Mass will be Raymond Rogers and Kenneth Johnson. Decorations for the sanctuary are under the direction of Joseph Zajac, assisted by Alfred Messier. I The altar and sanctuary will be I flanked with pine, holly, youpons, and poinsettlas. The crib will be set up in the sanctuary and will contain all the figures except the three kings. The three kings will be placed in the crib on January 6. the feast of the Epiphany, for it was not until that d#y when the three kings came to Bethlehem After the Feast of the Epiphany, the crib will be taken down and stored away until next Christmas season. The public is cordially invited to attend any of the services held in Saint Egbert's Catholic church, and visit the crib any time. Correction! A line in the sermonette on last Friday's church page should have read ". . . the ox knoweth his own er and the ass his Master's Crib." Due to a typographical error "crib" appeared as "club." GOOD NEWS (continued from page one) ? commercialixed into a time of receiving gifts, a time of feattlng, a time of extravagance, a time of drunkenness. The spirit of Christmas is lost as we supplant the carols of the church ? "O Come, All Ye Faithful." "Joy to the World!" "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," and "Silent Night, Holy Night"? with tb? secular hits, regardless of how beautifully they may be rendered by aome crooner or chattering blues singer. These material and secular trends may seem ever so innocent; bat they are the clothing of greed, hate, and lust that would destroy the Spirit of Christmas, making Christ Mass X Mass. The joys of the first Christmas are (till with ut. Heaven is still open to the simplest faith. The angels would break through and sing to us. The Christ Child would come to ui and abide with us. Yes, there is joy and hope. With Christ In Christmas the pow er is still with us to redeem our past, save our present, and direct our future, (n this joy and hope we can ting: "The wrong shall fail, the right prevail. With peace on earth, good-will to men!" C. Maness Mitchell, Pastor Havetock Methodist Church OUR CRIISTMAI GREETING GOOD USED CARS New 1949 Dodge Wayfarer, Plastic Seat Covers BELOW LIST!!
