Conference-Leading Newport Tops Morehead City 62-47 In * gam? that wu closer than" many people had expected, New port beat Morehead City 62-47 Fri day nifht. On the basia of pact performances, the conference lead ers had been expected to win by at least 20 pointa. The Uorehead City girls won 52-38. Newport's Sid Manning was top scorer with 20 points, and Lloyd Culpepper was second with 17. Roy Dennis scored 11 for the confer ence leaders. Leading scorer for Morehead City was Jerry T. Willis with 11 points. Three players, Jerry W. Willis, Denny Lawrence, Dave Freshwater, tied for second with seven points each. The high-scoring Newport play ers had one of their infrequent bad nights, and the Eagles might have won the game with a few breaks. Manning, Dennis and Culpepper normally score more than 20 points each, but only Culpepper was able to score 20 Friday night. Billy Widgeon, another high scorer for Newport, was out of action. Fouls prevented the Eagles from taking advantage of Newport's low scoring. Three players who usual ly contribute several points to Morehead City's total fouled out before they could do much scoring. Dave Freshwater left the game in the third period and Lawrence and Gil Faber fouled out in the fourth. At one point in the game, More head City fans were sure that New port had six players on the floor. A stray dog ran out on the ceurt and tripped Lawrence just as he was driving in for a layup shot. Flay was halted for a few minutes while the officials attempted to re move the dog. Ann Long of Morehead City' and Edna Mann of Newport each scored 25 points to tie for scoring honors in the girls' game. Carolyn Guthrie of Morehead City was second with 19 points. The game started off to be very close and only one point separated the two teams at the end of the first period. In the second period, however, Morehead City began to draw away from the visitors and increased its lead during the re mainder of the game. One of the big attractions for fans at the game was Newport's mascot. 5-yearold Candy McCoy. Candy is not only the team's mas cot but she is also the No. 1 cheer leader. Whiskey 1*3-35 Sea Dog Cagers Beat Jones Central Five 58-47 The Beaufort Sea Dogs put on* a last-period drive to beat Jones Central 58-47 Friday night. After trailing at half-time, the Sea Dogs came on to tie the score in the third period and go ahead in the fourth. The Beaufort girls won 53-44. Jones' Delmas Brown took scor ing honors with 18 points, and Billy Eudy broke out of his scoring slump to score 18 points for Beau fort. Bob Sasser was Jones' second Newport Seeks To Continue Victory Streak By Charles Hill Newport high's basketball team will seek to extend its winning streak to 23 consecutive games to night when it plays host to Jack sonville in a doubleheader begin ning at 7:00. It will be the second meeting be tween the two teams. Newport won the first game 73-56 as they piled up a big halltime lead which the Onslow boys were unable to over come. Jacksonville, with Red Warren back from last year and bolstered by Blake and Simpson from last year's Camp Lejeune team, was ex pected to have the best team on the local schedule despite two or three setbacks. They are handi capped by not having a gymnasium and must play all their games away from home. Only recently they were accepted into the Northeast conference which includes New Bern and Kinston. Red Warren's 20 points, including 10 of 11 free throws, led the losing effort in the previous game. The locals are hoping that the flu bug which cost them the serv ices of forward Billy Widgeon in the Dixon and Morehead City games will not cause any further sickness. No other members have missed games but several were not up to par for.the Morehead game. Widgeon is expected to play in this game and if so he will start along with Lloyd Culpepper at forward, Sidney Manning at center, Roy Den nis and Levy Lilly at guards. Jacksonville does not have a girls' team so the varsity game will be preceded by a game by the junior varsities. n high man with 13 points. Two other Sea Dogs reached double fig ures. Gehrmann Holland scored 12 points and Jimmy Modlin picked up 11 before fouling out in the fourth period. For three periods, the game showed signs of being a repeat of the last meeting between the two teams. Beaufort won that game in overtime. In Friday night's game, the Sea Dogs jumped to an early lead and were ahead 14-11 at the end of the first period. The visitors took over in the second period and led 23-19 at the end of the half. In the third period, the lead see sawed back and fourth between the two teams, and the period ended with the score tied 37-37. In the final period, the Sea Dogs took the lead and held it. They scored 21 points while holding the visitors from Trenton to ten. Foul shooting again helptd the Sea Dogs as it did Tuesday night against Morehead City. Beaufort made good on 18 out of 26 free throws while Jones Central could hit onlv 11 out of 30. Gehrmann Holland and B. G. O'Neal both had perfect nights at the free throw line, Holland making eight out of eight and O'Neal making three out of three. Two players produced all but one of Beaufort's points in the girls' game. Carol Jones and Colleen Guthrie tied for scoring honors with 28 points each. Jackie Dickin son contributed the other point. There was little doubt about the outcome of the game as Beaufort led from the beginning. At the end of the half, Beaufort had a twelve point lead, but Jones cut it to four points in the third period. Beau fort scored 15 points in the fourth, however, to insure the victory. The officiating in both games left much to be desired. The referees let things get out of hand and many more fouls could have been called but weren't. Support ers of both teams were on the of ficials throughout both games. The Sea Dogs played host to Swanaboro last night in a game originally scheduled lor tonight. Friday night, they will travel to Newport to meet the conference leaders.
