An article in the Dec. 30 issue of People Today, comment! on work being done with radioactivity in connection with shellfish. Titled "Radioactive Clama," the article tella of cooperative efforta of the Fish and Wildlife Service and Duke University marine lab on Piver's Island. Beaufort, to (row bigger and better shellfish. The lab has immersed clams, oy sters, scallops, etc. in jars of aea water to which microscopic par ticles of radioactive plant food have been added, relates the arti cle. Geiger counters and similar equipment measure the radioactiv ity of particles before they are ab sorbed by the shellfish. These in struments also check on the trans fer of radioactivity from the water to the shellfish as it feeds. Clams radioactivated usually grow to several times the size of ordinary clams, the article states. This could open new fields for those who want bigger and better seafoods, chickens, steaks, etc., the article concludes. The two-page story contains pic tures of the apparatus used in the fishery experiments and a picture of Miss Molly Hopkins, of Beau fort, summer lab worker, holding a large radioactivated clam and a small ordinary one.
