Eagles Top Newport 72- 70 Spotting the Newport basketball team 12 point*. 62-60/ going into the last quarter, Morehead City's Eagle* came back into action after a week's layoff Friday to squeeze a 72-70 victory m the final 39 seconds on J. W. Willis's layup. With the Eagles' Wayne Cheek and Jerry T. Willis teoac'HMMly coatruUmg the ball,' the Eagle* whittled the lead by playing heads up ball and making every shot count. The dock read 4:25 aad the Eagles were behind ?MB Charity tosses by Bobby Willis and Larry Sutherland, (or the Eagles, made it 66-62. Harlan t'ar raway, for Newport, made it 68-64 after J. T. Connected with a push shot. Newport Leads 7M6 Another push shot by Bobbv Willis made it 66-66 then with 1:30 left, Levy Lilly sank two charity tosses to put Newport in front 70-66 for the final Newport points. Newport then fell into a freeze after J. T. shaved the score to 70-68 only to hare it broken up by Bobby Willis. He then sank a layup on a fast break to tie the (ante at 70 all with 39 soeonds to go. Pandemonium reigned in the Newport gym as J. W. Willis raced for the basket on a fast break to sink a layup putting the Eagles ahead 72-70 with 17 seconds left. Newport sued for time. Play on the floor was very rough and the referees had their hands full, calling a foul with four sec onds remaining on Morehead. Jim Kelly stepped to the foul line with the tieing points resting on his shoulders. He missed them both and More head was the victor. Bobby Willis, game hero in the final minutes, was carried from the floor on the shoulders of his teammates. Fouls Hurt Eagles During the final hectic minutes J. T. for Morehead and Lilly for Newport left the game via per sonals. Denny Lawrence, who^lay ed another brilliant game on the floor for Morehead, left the game the same way in the third period. Using a 1-3-1 zone, later switch ing to a sliding 2-3, the Eagles rapped out two quick points in the first quarter adding two more mo ments later. Both teams hit from the field for a 6-6 tie then More head shoved ahead as it got its tower pass and fast breaks work ing. Newport asked for time with 1:30 left in the period with the score reading 15-6, Morehead. Lawrence was controlling the floor and J. T. and Cheek were hogging the bas ket giving the ball to LawrenM ant Willis that pushed the score. Newport was using a 1-3-1 zone too, then switched to a 2-3 trying set shots to get the lead. Eugene Edwards was working well on the floor and Sidney Manning, Hoy Garner, and Jim Kelly were work ing the buckets, but weren't con necting. Eagles Lead As the battle resumed Carraway worked the floor giving the ball off for six points as the quarter ended. Morehead also dumpeu six to Had 18-12. Carraway and Manning took over board control in the second period shaving Morehead's lead to 18-15. Morehead began committing tech nical errors; travelling, and double dribbling, as their passing grew ragged. Newport took this advantage to press and with Manning deadly on set shots, forced the Eagles to sue for time as the score stood 25-21. The rest didn't help the Eagles for they were frittering away the lead steadily as passes went astray and Newport dominated the boards. Carraway put Newport in the lead 31-30 with two minutes to go. Cheek hit a layup to get the lead back, 32-31. Newport Lead* at Hal/ Eight points were rammed home by Newport in the remaining minute to Morehead's two allow ing Newport to leave the floor at halftime leading 39-34. The battle resumed in the third period as Lilly hit six straight points before Morehead used a man-to-man to halt the drive, but only momentarily as Newport tensed victory and piled up points using a press and stealing looae balls and passes. ? Edwards. Manning, Carraway. and Lilly ju st couldn't be stopped as they kept pouring in buckets that gave Newport a 12-point lead, 62-90, at the end of the third period. Manning left the game via fouls in the final 30 seconds. " Morehead was a different team starting the fourth frame. The Eagles played coo! ball, steadied their passing game, and were more accurate from the floor. They tightened their defense and slowly started whittling Newport's lead. Newport scored six points in 3:35 while Morehead dumped in 10 set ting the stage for the dramatic finish with 4:25 left. J. T. Willis Hits 21 J. T. Willis led Moreiead with 21 points, Cheek had 17, Denny Lawrence I tad 13, and Bobby Willis contributed 10. Pacing Newport was Manning with 22, Carraway had 15, and Lilly had 11. The Eagles made 21 of 34 free throws and Newport hit 22 out of 38. Starting for Morehead was J. T. Willis, J. W. Willis, Cheek, Denny Lawrence, and Bobby Willis. Start ing for Newport was Manning, Ed wards, Carraway. Kelly, and Gar ner. Subbing for the Eagles was Ro land Cannon, Larry Southerland, Dalmon Lawrence, J. W. Long, and Kent Brown. Eagles Will Take on Dixon Tonight in Morehead Gym Morehead City High will prepare1 for Friday's return clash with Beau fort by meeting Dixon tonight in the More head City gym. A double header is scheduled with the girls game getting underway at 7:30 p.m. More he ad is favored to beat the Dixon crew without much trouble, but could ran into some trouble. The Eagles came out of Friday's battle royal at Newport in good physical shape. The Eagles will probably start Jerry T. Willis. Jer ry W. Willis, Wayne Cheek. Den ny Lawrence, and Bobby Willis. Beaufort will be idle tonight be cause of an open date. Plans to play the Beaufort Terrors for the March of Dimes have been post poned until a later date. Jones Central will be at Smyrna tonight in a conference game that should sec Smyrna coming out on top. Smyrna has a speedy crow and will be playing on Us home court. Newport Hosts Pamlico Pamlico, which handed Newport a 49-45 lots recently, will be at the Newport gym. Newport, still stinging from its 72-70 loss to Morehead City, will be out for the victory. If Newport plays tonight like it did Friday, Pamlico will come out on the short end. Atlantic, after being idle all last week will resume action to night against Aurora on Aurora's coiu t. This game is rated a toss up. Swansboro will travel to Camp I^ejeune in the other conference game scheduled for tonight. Odds makers give this one to the Dev^ pups with plenty to spare. The Devilpups are undefeated in conference play. They lost two games, one to Jacksonville, a Class AA school; and were 'topped recent ly by Richlands who forfeited twice to Newport. John Jones Leads Knights To 69 - 36 Win Thursday Johnny Jones, Queen Street for ward, led the Blaek Knights cagers to a 69-36 vietory Thursday over Georgetown High of Jacksonville at Beaufort with 21 points. Georgetown had previously taken the measure of the Knights in a game played ia Jacksonville, 50-58 *in a cloaMfeatfe: The Knight* ran up 19 points in the first quarter to Georgetown's six, adding 15 points in the second quarter to lead 34-16 at the half. With subs dotting the lineup in the second half, Queen Street kept rolling up the score in the third and fourth periods for the easy win. The gamp was featured by the ball stealing tactics of the Knights. Throughout the game Queen Street players constantly stole the ball from Georgetown. Jordan, White Star BUI Jordan and Bill White were outstanding defensively for the Knights in their rebounding. Both hit for seven points. Helping Jones was Matthew Godette with 19 points and Ray Ellison with 14. Roy Hurst paced Georgetown with 14 points and James Sarsur followed with 10. Jones' 21 points boosted his total to 136 points in 12 games for a 11.3 per game average. Godette apped hit average to 10.9 and Ellison's average is 10.8 per game. The Knights now have a 9-4 sea ?on record and are angling for tbe conference first place with a 9-2 record. Thursday, the Knights will travel to Aurora. Queen Street Girls Tie Queen Street girls battled the Georgetown lassies to a 27-27 tie Thursday after leading in the sec ond quarter. Queen Street lassies grabbed a four-point lead in the fourth frame, 27-28, only to see Doris McNeil, Georgetown forward, hit two con secutive field goals in the last 40 seconds to tie the game. Score by quarters: Queen St. (Boys) 19 Georgetown 6 Queen St. (Girls) 6 Georgetown 6 Firemen Put Out Fire Beaufort firemen put out a grass (ire at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the home of Mrs. Myrtle Piver on high way 70. Mrs. Piver telephoned the fire departmant when the fire she had started in her backyard spread and threatened some nearby small buildings. Beaufort, won the pocket billiard tournament Fri day at the Beaufort Bar. Beaufort, defeating Howard Hun rungs 125 111 for five wins and no losses Both men were undefeated until Friday's match, both having won four games. Hunniags earlier had upset last year's champ, William "Skykie" Thomas. Stallings received a trophy for winning the tourney, sponsored by the American Billiard Congress. The trophy will be inscribed with his name and date. Tuesday Stallings defeated Thomas, Wednesday Charles Sty ron downed George Lewis, and Thursday H tannings topped George Lewis in games played last week. Hunmngs still hokfs high run honors with 25 and the best game record with 41 innings. One more game will be played tomorrow night to complete the tourney. It will not eifect Stalling*' crown however. Eagle JV's Tip Beaufort 35-26 Holding Beaufort's Junior Varsi ty to five points in the final quar ter Thursday, Morehead City JV's took a 35-26 win in the Morehead ?ym. Leading 21-9 at the half. More head watched as its tremendous lead melted under the steady pounding of Beaufort JV's led by Jimmie Owens. Beaufort connected for 12 points in its desperate bid to over take the lead in the third period but fell short 25-21. Morehead JV's took a 96 lead at the end of the first period, toss ing in 12 points in the second frame as Beaufort JV's were held to three points for the 21-9 half time score. President Reports Fred Hardy, Morehead City Lions Club president, reported at the Thursday night meeting on the district meeting in Goldsboro last week. Mr. Hardy was one of the delegates. Pheae Mill Fast Eagtetie Crew Defeats Newport 59-43 Ann Long Gets 27 Point* to Lead Gals to Eighth Win The Eaglettes of Morehead City High returned to basketball action Friday, handing the Newport sex tet a decisive 59-43 win on the Newport hardwood. After getting off to a slow start, the Eaglettes poured on the coal and for three quarters constantly kept Newport on the defensive. Newport failed to provide a threat to the victory-minded Eaglettes as its shooting from the floor and charity line was way below par. Th? fii'sl quarter was a defen sive battle on both sides with Eaglettes Ann l ong. Polly Steed, and Carolyn Guthrie fashioning a 9-4 lead at the end of the period Raflettes Control Rail Ann Hardy and Geraldine Best, for Morehead. were controlling the ball to give Eaglette forwards a chance to sneak through for goals. Newport's Barbara Chadwick and Sarah Culpepper were doing a fine job of guarding and rebounding for Kita and Virginia Mann. But the Newport lassies, trying set shots, were not connecting either from the field or the charity line. Morehead opened up in the second frame with 16 points to Newport's 12 to take a 25-16 lead at halftime. Newport came back in the third period's opening minutes to shave the Morehead lead led by Ann Dennis and Jestine Henderson. Miss Culpepper and Miss Chadwick were controlling the ball to give the Newport scoring duo opportun ities at the bucket. With Newport's shooting eye vastly improved, 10 points were dumped in from the field and the first tree throw of the game was made by Newport. The Eaglettes, midway in the period, started pull ing away again as Miss Hardy and Varina O'Neal grabbed the ball at every opportunity, pushing the! score to 41-27 at the end of the frame.
