Chaages Occur Many major changes have taken place in the agriculture picture during the past few yeirs. In the early 30's our farmers were asked to plow up a portion of their cot ton acreage, kill off a few their pigs to meet consumer demand. During two wars our farmers were asked to rapidly speed up our ag riculture production to meet war time needs. After the war our gov ernment supported the price of a few basic commodities in order to assist our farm people to adjust back to peacetime production. A highly geared, mechanized type of agriculture plus support prices with a declining export market have resulted in the piling up of tremendous surpluses of some of our farm commodities. Mr. Williams said yesterday, "In one sense an abundance production is a healthy situation. We are thankful of the fact that we are not in the position of some of our neighboring nations by not being , able to feed our people. At the | same time our farmers cannot con tinue to produce and pile up sur pluses of any commodity that there is no consumer demand in this country. "Through the efforts of your Na tional Farm Bureau, the Depart- 1 ment of Agriculture and the Ag riculture Extension Service, consid erable emphasis and concentrated effort will be devoted to finding ways and means of disposing of these surpluses. "Our farm people must not at anytime overlook the important part that they can play in develop ing the type of program that will best fit their needs. 1 hope that none of you will overlook the fact that if we as 5 per cent of the nation's population fail to write our own farm program, there are other groups of people that are eagerly waiting to formulate our farm policies. ?If allowed to do that, 1 can assure you that such program would definitely not be executed in the best interest of the farm people." Talks were made by Congress- 1 man Graham A. Barden and Sena tor Clyde Hoey at Friday night's | banquet. Commenting on his visit, Mr. Williams said, "1 only wish that it was possible for every American farmer to have the opportunity of attending a number of our State and National Farm Bureau meet ings and visit the Washington of fice in order that all o{ our farm people might have first hand infor mation on the tremendous influ ence your Farm Organization has in developing our agricultural pro grams. Mr. Williams was recipient of the expense-paid trip to Washington as the result of Carteret County's meeting its Farm Bureau member ship goals consistently daring the [ past several years.
