Eagles, Atlantic, Smyrna Ball Clubs to Play Today Morehead City, Atlantic, and Smyrna baseball teams* are scheduled to swing back into action today after a forced layoff due to wet fields. Wet fields cancelled the Morehead City-Smyrna frame Tuesday, also the Atlantic-Pamlico County tilt. Today Morehead City is scheduled to journey to Pamlico County Visiting Ladies Win Golf Event Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point ladies took top honors in the Ladies Day Golf event Tuesday at the Morehead City Golf and Coun try Club. Mrs. Mary Murphy and Mrs. Kay Sharit, both of Camp Lejeune tied (or low gross in the 18-hole medal play tourney. Both posted 87. Mrs. Ethelene Quesenberry of Cherry Point took low net honors with 74. Mrs Jacqueline Eure of Morehead City was runner-up with 75. Mrs. Eure and Peggy Redfield, Cherry Point, were tied at 28 for the least number of putts in the 18 holes. Mrs. Marie Payette, of Cherry Point, had 32 putts for the honor of having the highest num ber. Wednesday the men of the More head City Golf Club will play a team from Farmville, N. C. The event will be 18 holes, starting at 1 p.m. 'lor a game and AtlanUc will travel to Smyrna. Either Walter Thomas or Jerry Pittman will go to the hill for the Eagles. Atlantic will probably send Thomas Salter against Roy Styroh at Smyrna. For Smyrna it will be the firit game actually played. Atlantic forfeited the season opener to Smyrna and the weather cancelled the Eagle tilt scheduled for Tuesday. There is also some baseball activity in other parts of the county. Beaufort High has dropped all of its ball games except two away games this year because its field is in such condition that it would be impossible to get it in shape this year, B. E. Tarkington, principal, said. Newport is still undecided at this writing whether it will have a team this year. A meeting of prospec tive team members and Coach Ameiul Casey was scheduled for yesterday afternoon to decide defi nitely. Coach Gannon Talbert of the Morehead City Eagle Nine stated Wednesday that Camp Lejeune will be added to the Eagle schedule. Queen Street High is still having scheduling difficulties. The Knights were inactive this week but are hoping to resume action next week. Eagles Are Still Happy Over Jones Central Win By SHELLY SMOYER Sports Editor After Friday's win over Jones Central, the Morehead City High Nine are still in high jinks. And for good reason too. It was the first time Coach Gannon Talbcrt had the pleasure of besting Jones Central in four years. It was a repetition of last year when the two teams met. The Eagles had won two games without defeat. Walter Thomas was on the mound for the Eagles. But there the similarity ended. Thomas went on to win the game by his. fine clutch pitching along with a grand catch in the last of the seventh by Gene Smith The team was so grateful. Smith was carried off the field on his team mates' shoulders. The rumor department has been working overtime in Morehead City in regards to the Eagles' next football coach. The story we heard is that the Pamlico County Coach Crellon Manire is slated to pilot the Eagles on the gridiron come this fall. Another faction would like to see John Evans, former Beaufort coach, return to this coun ty for Morehead. No official word has come from Morehead City High officials as to who the new coach will b?. Mean while, rumors will keep on flying. John Maxwell and party of Goldsboro, officially opened sea trout season in Morehead City in shore waters last Thursday. Max well caught 24 speckled sea trout and many of them were pretty good size. Old Man Weather has been a bit unkind to Carteret County baseball teams so far this week. By the looks of things he's not too anxious to ? relent . for the games scheduled today. Rain forced Morehead City, At lantic, and Smyrna out of action Tuesday. There may be a chance these games will be rescheduled later on in the season. Of local interest was the College All-Stars-Harlem Globe Trptters tilt in Raleigh Wednesday. Several sports fans were planning on going. Another attraction was the Cincin nati Redleg-Washington Senators battle at Wilmington yesterday afternoon. Tonight on TV, Carl "Bobo" Ol son will defend his middleweight crown against Kid Gavilan, welter king. Odds are in favor of "Bobo," but just slightly. It will be telecast locally over WNCT-TV, starting at 10 p.m. After seeing the "Joe Louis Story," last week some memories cropped up that made good copy in the major papers during Joe's reign as heavyweight champion. Among the foremost of the stories in the Joe Louis era of box ing, was the one of how Joe told his mother Of fhe'* Itekfng he to0k from Max Schmeling. "He whupped me Ma," was his answer and Joe went on to become a greater champ. It was also said that Joe always put his opponents away in quicker time in a re-match. The Billy Conn, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Max Schmeling bouts gave support to this one. Remember the tale that Joe had to pay Jimmy Braddock a certain amount from every bout after he won the heavyweight title because, they said, he wasn't supposed to be next in line? It was a long time before folks forgot this. The heavyweight boxer portray ing the Brown Bomber, Coley Wal lace, evidently wasn't too inspired by Joe's success, for after making the film, he fell a KO victim to Ezzard Charles who was making his comeback for the title he once held. Frank Fockler Speaks At Sales Training Session Frank Fockler, Wilmington, wis the principal speaker at the bi weekly regional sales training course conducted by White Ice Cream and Milk Co. last Thursday at the Hotel Fort Macon in More head City. Mr. Fockler spoke to the re gional salesmen on sales promo tion, safety, and neatness of ap pearance. Attending from this area were R. B. Howard, L. O. Brinson. Guion McCain. Marvin Willis, Rupert Wise, Bedford Dowty, R. E. Tew, and James R. Hardison. Horseshoe crabs are more closely related to scorpions and spiders than to true crabs. Swansboro Nips Camp Lejeune 2-1 Tuesday , By S/SGT. J. J. OGGERINO A walk, two errors, and a three man conference as to who should catch a fly ball gave Swansboro a 2-1 victory over Camp Lejeune High Tuesday afternoon at Swans boro. First man up at the bottom of the second was Swansboro's left fielder Darrell Matthews, who walked to first. A pick-off attempt by moundsman Johnny Mugford re sulted in a wild throw, allowing Matthews to reach third. An infield hit by Cal Duplissey was fielded by third baseman Kip Hering whose wild throw to the plate resulted in Matthews scor ing the first run of the game. At the top of the sixth Devilpup catcher George Russell beat out third baseman Jerry Cannon's throw to first for a single. He made the round trip on a double error by shortstop Keith Littleton and Darrell Matthews, tying the game up at one-all. When Swansboro came to bat, Littleton was good for a single. Second-sacker Alex Reeves hit a high fly to short center field. The Lejeune second baseman, short stop and centerfielder converged on it and watched it drop between them. By the time the mistake was rec tified Littleton had scored Swans boro's winning run. Winning pitchcr Duplissey, who faced 27 batters, struck out 14, yielded five hits and two walks. Lejeune hurler Mugford pitched to 25 batters, allowed four hits and two walks, and struck out 12. County Gets Week Of Wet Weather Rain continued to fall here throughout the week. Now contrary to popular opinion. Hog Island, (or rather Hog Islands, there are six of them), are in Pamlico Sound and not in the ocean, aa I waa sure they were. Also, with a name like Hog laland I surely didnt expect to see aach a beautiful place. The scenery ia to me beyond any thing that 1 am capable of putting in print and do justice to the place. Wild ducka in a pond juat a few hundred feet from the lodge, 40 wild cattle, the most ferocious looking animals at first aight: but tame aa your puppy dog. There were some 50 gait visiting the golf course Tuesday. We had t tournament, but it looked more like a golf fashion parade. Man alive, some of these little gals could really hit a golf ball, and cute; there were some of the cutest lit tle chickadees I've seen since I left Hollywood. All I had to do was follow them around and take pictures. And to think, I get paid for this kind of nonsense. Wow: One of them asked if we had any caddies, and someone else, to be cute, laid, "Caddlet, what are they?" I thought the answer which popped out was wonderful: "Caddies? They are the guyt that get all the healthful benefits from golf YOU'RE supposed to get, plus two dollars." An open letter to mothers: Please watch your children around the waterfront. Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Penny heard a child crying. She opened the back door to the studio and there in the water beside the dock and the Gulf Breeze was a little 3-year-old girl. She had fallen overboard. For tunately Penny heard her and that great old Captain, Willard Lewis, was already fishing the child out. This is the second time this has happened in our back yard. Cap tain Willard happened to be there the time before, also. I hate children's funerals. Ill"" HOUNTAIN RIDGE STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY L $3?. 52!2. . . . TO MAKE YOUR LIFE WORTH LOAFING!
