Eure, clerk, gave the board a financial report which stated that 6&5 per cent of the taxed had been collected duting the firtt nine months of the fiscal year. The board felt the town waa in satisfactory financial condition. Mr. Eure reported that the state wanted a detailed survey of the pavihg work required if the beach intended to use Powell funds and have the state do the work. Feel ing that the survey would be too coatly. the board doclded to take no action but authorized the mayor to proceed with having work done by a private contractor.' Mayor Cooper said that all roads will be put "in first class condi tion" and Durham avenue from Atlantic Aie., to Fort Macon road will be paved. He said the work would cost $1,568.25 l'owell funds available amount to $2,388. Sidewalks around the Atlantic Beach Hotel will also be fixed. Because the Carolina Telephone Co. franchise is to expire soon, a new franchise was read to the board. Law requires a second read ing at the next board meeting. The mayor reported that Caro lina Power and Light Informed Mr. Eure that their tax assessment at the beach was too small in view of the improvements that had been made and they have paid a tax "about 50 times that which was originally charged," the mayor said. The board agreed that the action was most unusual and was appreciated. The commissioners requested that the mayor contact George Franklin of the League of Munici palities and have him come to the beach as soon as possible to dis cuss facilities for fire fighting Commissioner Carl Lanier also sug gested that when a plan is worked out that the property owners be told of the proposal at a general town meeting. Mayor Cooper said he would also like Mr. Franklin to give advice on zoning the beach. Cliff Nelson and Elvin Franks, who have taken over managership of two places on the beach, were okayed by the board f A receiving brer permit!.
