Home Department Members Hear Report on County Cancer Drive TV American Home Department of the Woman's Club met Monday evening at the Civic Center for the bit meeting until the fall. In the abaence of the president. Mrs. R. E. Willis. Mrs. W. C Cottingham, vice-president, presided. Mrs George Ball, commander of the cancer drive being carried on this month, gave the members an outline of the work which has been done in this county She stated that tbt Rev. Leon Couch, pastor of the First Methodist Church, has been a big help in the publicity for this drive and he has arranged for films on this suhject to be shown in the educational building of the church. Mrs.' Ball announced that the drijre would continue through the second week in May. She called attention of the members to the flower show, sponsored by the Junior Woman's Club, which will be held in the Recreatien Center May 6 Also she reminded the club of Three Hostesses Entertain At Dessert Bridge Tuesday Mrs. S. A. Horton, Mrs. Bruce Willis and Mrs. Robert Laughton were hostesses Tuesday afternoon at a dessert bridge party held in the Recreation Center. Thirteen tables were in play. The tables were covered with white cloths and the rooms were beautifully decorated with mixed spring flowers, including iris, pan sies, roses and larkspur. The hostesses served strawberry shortcake and during progressions, iced drinks, nuts and mints. High score winner was Mrs. M. T. Mills. Mrs. Waldron Baily 111 won second high and floating slam prizes and Mrs. W. C. Carlton won low. Jimmy Wheatley Elected Head of Sub-District Jimmy Wheatley of the Ann St. Methodist Chureh, Beaufort, was ?lected president of the Metho dist Youth Fellowship Sub-District at the monthly meeting held Mon day night at the North River Church. He was elected for the 1954 55 term. Other new officers are Peggy Howard, vice-president; Geneva Hardesty, secretary; Ann Hardy, treasurer; Faye Mason, publicity superintendent; and Mrs. Ruby Woodruff of Newport, adult work ?r. At this meeting It was em phasized that members should sup port the Methodist Youth Fund. Varena Willis reported on this. Camp Don-Lee, Louisburg As sembly, Lake Junaluska Convoca tion, Annual Conference Session and older youth assembly are a few ?f the summer MYF facilities the youth were urged to attend. The host church also presented ? very insiring drams, Crown of Thorns. Refreshments were served. T??A|e Club Cancelled Mr. Fred Lewis, director of recreation at the - More head City Recreation Center, has announced that there will be no teen-age club party tomorrow night. Charles Hassell. Beaufort, pianist, and Mrs. J. H Waldrop Jr., New port, soloist, who presented a mus ical profram. Mrs. Waidrop sang the two theme songs from the radio Firestone Hour. They were. If I Could Tell You. and. In My Gar den, both written by Ida Firestone. For her last number she sang an aria. One Fine Day. from the opera Madame Butterfly, (or which she wore a costume. Mrs. Massed ex plained two numbers from the Broadway musical Kismet, and played parts of both. She plans to give both numbers in the next con cert of the Beaufort Choral Club of which she is director. The hostesses. Mrs. Earl Nor wood. Mrs. M. M. Ayscue and Mrs. Fred Lewis, served ice cream sodas, cookies and nuts. Adcox-Griffin Miss Nancy J. Griffin of More head City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W F. Batts of Rocky Mount, and Mr. Melvin R. Adcox of Camp Lejeune, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Adcox of Battleboro, were married in a double ring ceremony Sunday, April 11, in South Carolina. Mrs. Adcox wore a beige spring suit with matching accessories. The couple are makin* their home on Arendell street in Morehead City. Mrs. Adcox is X-ray technician at the hospital and Mr Adcox is in the Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Lejeune. Dinner Party Honors Mrs. Bell, Mrs. Piver Mrs. John Nelson entertained her mother, Mrs. N. P. Bell and her niece, Mrs. H. T. Piver, Sat urday evening at a birthday din ner. The honorees were present ed with corsages of American Beauty roses. A three course dinner was served. Those present were Mrs. R. B.( Taylor of Washington. N. C., Mrs." Beulah Wiggins of New Bern, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Bell Sr. and Mrs. Nina Powers, all of this city. Mrs. Hamilton Entertains Fortnightly Bridge Club The Fortnightly Bridge Club met last Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Alvah Hamilton Sr. on Arcndell street. Upon arrival guests were served a dessert course of lemon ice box cake, nuts and code*. Mrs. H. UJoslyn won high score, Mrs. Harold Webb was second high and Mrs. W. C. Carlton woii low. Mrs. Straw Talks to Book Club on Navajo Indians Mrs. Paul Webb was hostess when the Lanier Book Club met Tuesday evening at the Civic Cen ter. Mrs. C. B. Wade, program chairman, introduced the speaker, Mrs. Hubert D. Straw of Newport. Mrs. Straw, a teacher at New port School, spoke on the Navajo Indians, whom she taught for many years in the Navajo reservation in the southwestern part of the United States. Mrs Mattie Willis left Wednet day for Norfolk, Va., to visit her husband, Mr. Coot Willis, a patient at Tanner's Creek Marine Hospital. Mrs. Ida Mae Willis is ill at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. A. Hough in Kinston. Mrs. John E. Piatt Jr. returned Monday from Effingham, III., where she visited her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Charles EL Milone and infant son. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Davis re turned Tuesday night from Chapel Hill, where Mrs. Davis underwent an operation last week at Memorial Hospital. Mrs. R. H. Davenport has return ed from the Camp Lejeune Naval | Hospital following a major opera- 1 I* ? lion. She is at the home of tier parents. Mr. and Mr*. D. H. Mans field, at Mansfield. C . is visiting her sister and brother in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Piatt Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Bell were in Raleigh Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Joyner Jr. and son, Bobby, of New Orleans, are spending this week with his mother. Mrs. A. H. Joyner, and his sister, Mrs. W. F. Merion and daughter, Carol. Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews of Graham are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Stainey Davis. Young Adult Clou Talks Of Visitation, Nursery The Young Adult Sunday School Class of the First Christian Church met Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mm John Davia. Mm memben and two visitors were present. It wtu wuiatinced that charter members of the claas num bered live but in two months the membership has increased to 17. The members discussed the visi tation campaign began last months. Names were given out and these people will be visited by class members who will urge them to come to Sunday School. Mothers in the class have organ ized and started a nursery for younger children. It will be open during both the morning and eve ning church services to enable more mothers to attend church. The next meeting of the group will be the third Friday in May at the church. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Mc Cain will be hosts. Mr. and Mrs. Davis served re freshments after the meeting. More Social News Page 7 Annual Methodic Conference Scheduled for Newport Monday The St. James Methodist Church in Newport will entertain tke New Bern District of the Methodist Church at Us annual District Con ference Monday. A crowd of 300 Methodists ia ex pected for the all-day meeting which will begin with a song ser vice at 9:45 a.m. and cloae with a film. The Hidden Heart, at 3:30 p.m. This marks the firat time in many years that the Newport Church has entertained the diatrict and no stone is being left unturn ed to insure the success of the meeting, said the Rev. J. H. Wal drop, pastor. The Reverend H. K. King, super intendent of the New Bern district, will preside and will hear reports from the diatrict committees as well as welcome the visitors from the Methodist Orphanage in Ra leigh, the Board of Education of the North Carolina Conference and the Methodist College Foundation. The Rev. Dr. A. J. Walton of the Puke Divinity School will deliver the conference seroton. At Ute con elusion ot the moro'ng session * barbecue dinner will M served on the (rounds. The other two churc.\es on the Newport charge, Harlowt and Oak Grove, will assist the Newport church in serving of the dinner. Mr. and Mrs. John Doyle an nounce the birth of a son, John Edward Jr., Tuesday at the More head City Hospital. Mrs. Doyle is the former Ida Mae Broadhuret, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T.
