BelU wllVf w eaatwardly with Penderaona' north line to .the east line of said lot Board (Continued from Page 1) asphalt because the attaet was not taailt to take heavy traffic Chief of Police M. ? Guy said that trucka have been ordered to stay off tha street but they don't do it The clerk was authoring to haw signs put up prohibiting truck traffic ea Ana east of Live Oak Street. i Mr. Haasell, engineer, also said heavy log trucks are using the streets through Highland Park and causing the asphalt to crumble at the edges. Mayor Appointed Mayor C. T. Lewis was suggested by tbe commissioner. s as the town's representative to the civil defenae conference in JUleigh yesterday. Dan Walker, town clerk, report ed that Front Street and the 100 blocks of Turner and Craven Streets are in need of resurfacing. He said that Barrus Construction Co. is in the area and has quoted a price of $11,681.23 to do the work. The job would require, he added, 200 tons of sand asphalt for a lVfc inch topping, raising 12 manholes and two valve boxes Hie company said half of the coat could be paid this year and half next from Powell Bill funds. The clerk added that having the work done now would save the town about $1,500. The town en gineer said that Front Street has held up as well as it has because there is a six inch concrete base under the asphalt but he said that is now crumbling because the top cushion is worn. Gerald Hill, finance commis sioner, after studying the latest fi nancial report, said that the town is "$34,000 behind" its budget now and he didn't see how street pav ing could be undertaken. The mat ter was referred to Commissioner Hill and the clerk for further study. In discussing a budget for the coming fiscal year, the clerk said he could not work on the budget until he knew what this month's receipts will be The board discussed the traffic situation at the west end of Broad Street. Commissioner W. G. Tem ple suggested that stop signs be put on Broad at Orange and Moore Streets. Mr. Hassell and the chief of po lice suggested that Broad be a through street to be used as a truck relief route. No action was taken on putting up stop signs. Presents Report Gordon Hardesty, police commis sioner, presented thie month's po lice report. Gene Smith, town attorney, re marked that the new area of town annexed a couple years . ago, has never been toned. He said tbe plan ning board discussed the matter last month and a public hearing should be set on zoning the area. Mr Hassell suggested that since the town can zone a mile beyond the town limits, that the East Ann Street section be included in the zoning plans too. He said the town would have its new map by July. Attorney Smith reported that Congressman Barden has intro duced a House Bill which would return the Coast Guard property to the town at a coat of $1. The property is now owned byf the gov ernment. He also reported that the B&M Railroad had put marl in the holes on Broad Street. The board said oil was needed on top of the marl because it's all blowing away. Parking in the 200 block of Front Street was discussed. Cars on both sides of the streets cause a bottle neck, the board said. The town en gineer said that In the past an ordi nance was put on the books pro hibiting parking on the north side of tbe street from Orange to the home of the late Miss Lottis San ders, but the ordinance has not been enforced. Expecting s dredge to do some work in Tsylor's Creek, tbe board authorized the town engineer to draw up plans for distributing spoilage along the breakwater on the town's waterfront. Because of complaints about the Chicken Shack. 308 Queen St., own ed by Otis Sharpe, the board au thorised the chief of police to clou 11. At the requeet of Fire Commis sioner I. P. Harris, new (ire de pertment offlcen were ipproved and the department's authorized atrength increased from 60 to 75 men beginAing July 1.
