Sanders, chairman of the ! membership committee of the Morehead City Chamber of Com merce, told members of the conv ' mittee at a luncheon at Captain Bill's Restaurant Friday that the week's membership drive had net ted approximately $3,400. The chamber now has $6,490 toward their $12,000 budget for the year. Ted Davis, manager of the More head City Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the chamber is $2,600 ahead of collections of the past two years. Mr. Davis also stated that the chamber should have about $9,000 after the next .30 days. He ex plained this total on the basis of the number of persons who had been contacted and the ones who said that they would join within the next 30 days. Bernard Leary, president of the Chamber of Commerce, said, "I'm pleased with the drive and hope that we hit the quota." Operation Korea Is Successful Korean Boy Scouts will receive about $243,000 worth of new equip ment if the 540 Boy Scout Councils in the United States do as well as East Carolina Council has done in their recent "Operations Korea" drive to rehabilitate and equip Ko rean Boy Scouts. J. S. Day of Tarboro, vice-chair man, Council Camping Activities Committee, has supervised the marshalling of all equipment for the East Carolina Council. He es timated today that a stack of equip ment valued at over $450 was re cently shipped from Tarboro. The drive was completed July 26, he said. Included among the list of equip ment sent to Tarboro from the 12 districts and Camp Croatan of the East Carolina Council are 18 com plete Boy Scout uniforms', nine complete Cub Scout uniforms, six tents and dozens of knives, packs, canteens, first-aid kits and other scouting paraphernalia. Operation Korea was a nation wide drive in which enterprising Boy Scouts all over this country raised money and bought equip ment to help outfit their less for tunate friends in Korea. Day point ed out that the boys raised all the money themselves and that no adults were asked to contribute. Tarboro served as marshalling point for the equipment gathered in the East Carolina Council. From here it was sent to Richmond, Va., prior to being shipped to Korea. Water Finn's New Manager Takes Over Here C. W Williams, lormerly of Ef fingham, 111. has taken over man agership of the Carolina Water Co., which is the new owner of 'wn walu *ysiem* in Beaufort, More head City and Snow Hill. Temporary office for the firm is at 6th and Evans Streets in space rented in the Carteret Ice and Coal Co. building. Until this week Mr. Williams' office was in the Caro lina Power and Light Co. building. He arrived here July 23. He and his lamily, his wife and daughter, Barbara Lynn, 15, moved into the home at 2407 Arcndell St., More head City, yesterday. Mr. Williams has been with the General Waterworks Corp. 11 Mi years For the past two years he was manager of the water system at Effingham and prior to that was in charge of the systems at For dyce, Ark., and Pine Bluff. Ark. Mr. Williams said the water com pany office will be at 6th and Ev ans until a building can be put up on 5th street at the rear of the CP&L plant. It is anticipated that the building there, on a 40 x 100 foot lot will be ready in about two months. Billing for Morehead City, Beau fort and Snow Hill will be done in Morehead City, Mr. Williams said. This month the water and power bills were separate. When the water system was operated by CP&L, the power and water bills were one. Mr. Williams said that there have been complaints about July's water bill being higher than previous bills. The rates are the same, he said, but people are evidently^ for getting that up until the middle of July there was no rain. Home owners were using lawn sprinklers, hoses and more water than usual to keep flowers and lawns in good condition. It's natural, he added, that the bills would be higher. He added too that in some cases meters were not read each month. Located between the sidewalk and street as they are, they are dif ficult to find at some homes. In one place, meter readers have gone back three and four times to try to find the meter and can't locate it. Mr. Williams said the CP&L wa ter employees are being retained by the new firm. Mn Williams' arrival here brings to two the number of citizens who have been transplanted from Ef fingham to Carteret County in re cent months. Dr. Herbert Webb, resident physician at Sea Level Hospital, was formerly of Effing ham. Not only that, but Dr. Webb was the Williams' family doctor there.
