The best method of getting rid of them, experts say, is to cut down the box elders. A less drastic method involves a spraying with DDI; The ancient Roman empire at its peak had a standing army of only about 300,000 men. By VIVIAN BROWN AP NewafMtwrs Writer ONE OF THE JOYS of warm weather is'outdoor dining. Years ago backyard and terrace dining were limited to picnic type fare. But with the advent of chie weatherproof furniture outdoor dining took on a new glamor. Now the family may enjoy break fast, lunch and dinner outdoors when the weather is nice. The table, chairs and cushions may re main outdoors. Even the plastic j table cover or place mats will not Warm Weather Brings Fine Outdoor Dining Suiart new glassware adds glamour, but costs very little. be harmed by sudden showers. Designers are creating beauti ful but sensible tableware for open air dining. There are delightful item in the inexpensive bracket to charm any outdoor table. New glassware in bubbly, light- flecked emerald green has the textured look of more expensive and even antique glass. It is well-designed, adding a particular note of charm, considering that it may be found in dime stores and gift shops. LAZY SUSAN'S are perfect for outdoor tables to hold pickles, rel ishes. radishes, celery and may be had in glass as well as other ma terials. So, too, the casseroles are available in gaily colored, individ ual ovenware glass that may go from oven to table in a jiffy. Take your choice of sunny .yellow, green, red and grey. Outdoor 'table coverings are par ticularly elegant. These are made of washable non-woven nylon in some instances, with the look and feel of doeskin with colorful hand screened designs on either black or white backgrounds. Plastic place mats, may simulate linen, silk, or other fabrics in lattice, crochet, knit or other designs. Straw place mats *are very popular. Any of these may be wiped, ptt, witb a damp cloth. EVEN INSECT repellent is avail able in candle form in smart glass or other containers that will not de tract from your table setting. Evening dining may be enhanced particularly by candlelight. If you really want your table to look chic put a candle in a small flower pot, painted white or a color to harmonize with your table cloth. The advantage of the flower pot (besides being cute) is that the dirt will anchor the candle, keep it from blowing over and prevent it from igniting your table cloth. Freezing is becoming a pop ular method of conservation. The ancient Greeks used the fig tree as a guide post to the sea sons. Some 27 centuries ago a Greek philosopher was advising his countrymen that the winter storms were over, and it was safe to go to sea, as soon as the top-most leaves of the fig tree were the size of a crow's footprint. Even though the fig tree itself was once so used, its fruit certainly knows no season now. Picked off the tree when it is just right for eating fresh, its velvety smoothness and delicate flavor is enjoyed as a frozen fresh, fig the rest of the year. Soft-ripe, but not shriveled, the fig should be frozen soon after it is picked from the tree. Ripe figs mold easily, so if there is any de lay between picking and freezing, keep the figs cold. Sort and wash them. Do not freeze the ones that are slightly green (you will not like them) and watch for inside sour in the ripe ones. Cut off stems, peel or not, slice or leave whole and cover witji 40 per cent cold syrup ( or a little less sweet). For a 40 per cent syrup use 2 cups sugar and 3 cups water. Ascorbic acid may be used, the same as with peaches, to prevent discoloration. If you use it, just add one teaspoon of pure ascorbic acid to a quart of syrup. If you use on the commercial mixtures of ascorbic acid that is sold under /i trade name, use the amount recom mended on the label. You can coarsely crush the Sort ed and washed ripe figs, add 1/3 cup of sugar to each pint (with 1 tablespoon ascorbic acid solution if you like. Make ascorbic acid solution by adding one teaspoon as corbic acid to Mi cup of water just before it is to be used) and freeze for use as topping for ice cream, plain cake, and many other ways. Try some velva fruit. (Ask your home agent for folder "Making Velva Fruit at Home.") In brief: Suggested varieties: Brown Tur key, Celeste. Sort and wash tree-ripe, unshriv eled figs.' Whole or sliced. Peel or not. Pack into containers. Cover with 40 per cent cold syrup, leaving head space for expansioif. Seal and freeze at 0 degree or below. Crushed: coarsely crush. Add 1/3 cup sugar to one pint of figs. (Add one tablespoon of ascorbic acid solution to each pint of crushed figs, if desired. Make ascorbic acid solution by adding one teaspoon of ascorbic acid to Vt cup water.) Pack figs in container. Leave head space for expansion. Freeze. Store at 0 degree or below. Note: You may prefer your figs less sweet than these recommenda tions. Some figs are naturally sweeter than others, but generally speaking, these recommendations are satisfactory. * Information on growing, pre serving, and canning figs is avail able from the home agent's office. Mr. Thomas B. Morris, extension poultry specialist, gives us the fol lowing reminders for August: (1) Clean and disinfect the laying house Make It as comfortable as possible for the new pullets. (2) House pullets according to ma turity. Handle pullets gently when moving. (3) Pullets starting to lay or those already in production can safely be vaccinated with killed Newcastle vaccine. Do not vac cinate pullets that are over 16 weeks of age with any type of live virus vaccine. (4) Use a shallow litter in hot weather; according to research work, litter that was seven inches in depth was five to eight degrees warmer than a two-inch Utter. (5) Be sure to provide plenty of fresh, cool water during the hot weather. If you double the num ber of fountains during the sum mer, you will not have too many. (6) Cull all old hens that molt this month. Cull non-layers as they appear in the flock. (7) Secure fresh egg customers during the summer and fall. (8) Keep a Demonstration Flock Record for 1954-55. See your county farm or home agent for details. Triumphant Ticket Richmond, Va. (AP) ?
