Want Ads Frequently Have a Laugh in Them All is not serious reading in the want ads. It's true that the county depends upon these little messages to solve the basie needs of human ity, but want ad readers are fre quently rewarded by ads like these: $10 reward for south side apart ment. Large enough to keep young wife from going home to mother. Small enough to keep mother from coming here." A want ad in an Eastern news | paper sought applicants for "a $12, 500 per year job with a tax free expense allowance of $2,500," of fering "a young man interested in government and running for Con gress" a crack at the job. The ad brought a total of 57 replies and caused quite a stir in local political circles. In the middle of the last cen tury this classified advertisement appeared in the columns of a large American newspaper: "Farmer, aged 41, desires to cor respond with a young wom&n of simple tastes. Beauty unnecessary, prettiness not desired. Object matrimony." A young lady, Meg Charlton, an swered the advertisement, married its author She later became First Lady of the land. The advertiser was Ulysses S. Grant, eighteenth President of the United States. i The Republicans were at such low ebb in California in 1046 that a committee of 100 citizens in the 12th California district inserted a want ad for a candidate. A young man answered it. He was elected and re-elected. In 1950 he was appointed to fill the unex pired terms of the retiring Senator Downey. He won the seat for him self in the next election. The young man who got his start in politics through a want ad is to day's Vice President of the United States . . . Richard Nixon! An Alaskan sourdough ap proached the want ad counter of a Seattle newspaper intent upon giv ing the clerk an ad of great import. It was a "Personal" message want ing companionship. His comment, "I lost the wife which I got through your newspaper several years ago. She was such a fine woman that I thought I would try your newspa per again."
