'Slow Down' Campaign Pays Raleigh ? Slow Down and Live, the northeastern and southern states' summer crusade for safer highway travel ended with a 12.? per cent reduction in motor deaths or a saving of 594 lives. A summary of the drive was re leased today from the office of Major C. A. Speed, director of the Motor Vehicles Department's High way Safety Division and coordina tor of North Carolina's part in the slow down project. The anti-speed program co-spon sored by Gov. William B. Umstcad and the governors . of 23 other states from Maine to Texas, start ed during the Memorial Day week r nd and closed with the Labor Day weekend. Highway fatalities throughout the region dropped from 4.856 during the summer of 1953 to 4,202 for this* year. Greatest reduction reported by any one state was Louisiana's 10.1 per cent cut according to Major Speed. Records of other states ranged from a 72.3 per cent de crease for Mississippi to a 9.9 per cent decrease in deaths for Maine. North Carolina reported a 16.0 per cent decrease. In all, 15 states showed death reductions this year. They were Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisi ana, Mississippi, N?rth Carolina. South Carolioa, Tennessee, Texas. Virginia, Delaware. New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Ver mont. The Slow Down and Live project started in the northeast last year and was started in the south for the first time this year. Woman Faces Series of Counts Assistant Chief of Police Carlton Garner reported yesterday that Al berta Fair, Beaufort, was arrested Thursday on charges of diaturbing the peace, trespassing on her mother's praperty and creating a nuisance, using loud and profane language and posaessing non tax paid whisky. Officer Garner said the defend ant was put in jail under >100 bond and is scheduled for trial in Beaufort Recorder's Court this afternoon. The officer said that she was wanted on all but the whisky charge when he went to serve the warrant, but after he arrived at the home, on the north end of Queen Street,' he found a jar of non-taxpaid whisky. At 12:30 yesterday morning the assistant chief picked up Cleveland Godette, North Harlowe, on a charge of drunken driving and driv ing without an operator's license. Godette was put in jail under $150 bond. On Wednesday the assistant chief cited W. C. Flowers, Front Street extended, for failure to stop at a stop sign. Woman Injured When Car Upsets Mrs. Woodrow Deihl, who has >een living with her mother, Mrs. floy Goodwin, Lennoxville Road, 3eaufort, was injured in an auto nobile accident at 5:30 Saturday light. % Mrs. Deihl suffered a broken ight arm and shoulder and sprain ?d left wrist when the 1954 Uuick she was driving overturned m the Lennoxville Road. Her teven-month old son, Douglas A I en, who was in a baby car seat >eside her, was unhurt. Mrs. Deihl was driving east on he road when she said the baby itarted to crawl out of the seat. When she reached for him she ost control of the car ar^l it upset. Men at the nearby Beaufort fisheries factory had to be sum noned to right the car so its Krcupants could be removed.
