County Board Official Warns Against Higher Liguor Tax The county's dwindling revenue from state liquor stores was the subject of a lengthy comment by Dr. K. P. B. Bonner, chairman of the county board, at yester day's board meeting. The board chairman said that liquor store revenue used to bring In ?48,000, but last year the income was belew 124,000. He pointed out that a bill before the legislature proposes a liquor tax Increase of S pet cent. "If that bill tuttes." Dr. Bonner said, "the county will get nothing." The towns get their shares from gross, not net, receipts. All e* penses are deducted from the total liquor store revenue and the coui ty reeeives the residue. Alvah Hamilton, county attor ney, said thst it could be that in the future the county would be paying out money and sustaining a loss so that ABC stores in Beau fort, Morchead City and Newport could operate. Mr. Hamilton commented that no business would operate on the prin ciple of division of gross receipts rather than net profit. Total $31.2*8 Liquor sales last month totaled $34,298.05. Morehead City's sales were $18,899.05. Beaufort's $10, 763.05 and Newport, $6,836.75. State sales tax amounted to $2. 905.82. Paid to the Morchead City Hospital was $773.38, to Beaufort $492.52 and to Newport $303.88. The chairman of the county board said the commissioners should take every means posflbte to prevent an increase in the li quor tax. Possibility of changing the manner of division of ABC funds was hinted at. but no action taken. Property Sold In a land transaction, the board sold 17 feet of county property on Turner Street to the town of Beau fort for $900. The property will be used to give access, by way of an alley, to the rear of Front Street properties. The town bid on the entire lot, 47-foot frontage, but the county de cided to keep the property, minus the 17 feet, and put it up at public auction later. Appearing before the board in regard to the land purchase were Mayor Clifford Lewis, Town Clerk Dan Walker, Town Attorney Gene Smith ind C. T. Cheppell. Favors Health Center The Doard officially went on rfev ord favoring the building of a county health center and the bor rowing of $11,060 to meet the coun ty's obligation. The remainder of the funds would be supplied by the state and federal governments. A. D. Fulford, county sanitarian, was present to inquire into the status of the matter. A bill has already been intro duced, enabling the county to bor; row the money. The board approved the farm land values set up by E. T. Wil kin* & Associates for revaluation of property. Jasper L. Phillips, Kins ton, an official with the State Highway De partment, said the Swansboro Chief of Police. A. D. Allen, has raised the question of the location of the county line at Swanaboro. Under the direction of Chairman Jasper Bell, the Morehead City Finer Carolina program is moving along on schedule, Ted Davis, pub licity chairman, reports. The new fire station is going up. Prepara tions have been made for pouring the foundations. The town is corresponding with Mrs. Delia Hyatt, owner of the burned-over property on East Arendell St. It is understood that she is negotiating with contractors relative to tearing down the build ings. They should be out of the way within the next 60 days. Bob Howard, chairman of the new school gym committee, has run Into several minor snags, but hopes to clear these barriers with in the next week and get moving toward a better sports and com munity center. The civic club sign has been de signed by a local sign company and Fry Roofing Co., which will pay for the sign, is deciding what size would be best for erection at the city limits. The Jaycees under Chairman Russ Wlllan have cleaned off the proposed site for the midget teague activity and a backstop has been erected, dlay for the infield has been deposited and signs on the outer fence are being painted. Th entire league diamond will be custom tailored to midget specifi cations and tailored home-runs will be scored for the little fellows when balls go over the fence. Board Meet# D. O. April 14 The annual meeting of the More head City Chamber of Commerce will take place at the Recreation Center, Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. It ?H1 be a dinner meeting and all eivtc clubs of the city have voted to hold their regular weekly meetings with the chamber. Messick, president of East Carolina College, who has been termed by southern educa ton as "the South's leading edu-J cator," will be the speaker. Born at South Creek, in Bead-, fort County, Dr. Meuick received his undergraduate degree at Eloti College in 1B22. He old graduate work at the University of North Carolina and received his Ph.D de gree in administrative and super vision of schools at N. Y. Univer sity in 1934. In 1048 he received his Lit. D., from Elon and awarded the outstanding alumnus award for the same year. He was principal at Wade and Trenton; superintendent of schools in Spencer; dean of instruction at Elon College; professor at Teach ers College, Asheville; dean of in struction and administrative assist wit to the president, State Teach ers College, Monteiair, N. J., and from there came to ECC-aa presi dent Author of two books, "Person ality and Character Development," and "School Boards: Their Powers and Discretions," and niunerous ar ticles for state and national perio dicals, Dr. Hessick is also listed in "Who's Who in America", "Who's Important in Education."
