T. Smith Jr., fire ; chief. The department is awaiting a solenoid. Buss Ziegler of New Jersey was i guest at the meeting. National Guardsmen Will Attend Two Weeks' Camp Members of the Morehead City National Guard Unit will leave Sunday. Luther Hodges as directors of the railroad were three Carteret coun- ' tians, Clayton Fulcher Sr., Atlan tic; Hugh Salter, Beaufort, and Dr. B. F. Royal, Morehead City. Governor Hodges also recom mended J. H. Blount, Greenville, as chairman of the board and M. G. Mann. Raleigh, as general man ager. Mr. Blount is a Greenville businessman and Mr. Mann is gen eral manager of the North Caro lina Cotton Growers Cooperative. Other directors nominated in ad dition to those named above, are > Rep. J. A. Speight, Windsor, for mer state treasurer; Charles M. Johnson, Burgaw; and M. A. Co well, Jacksonville. He will succeed J. M. Broughton Jr., also of Raleigh. Albert R. Bell of New Bern is to be re-elected as the railroad's inspector-engineer. John Larkins Jr., of Trenton, A. B. Harless of Edenton and Law rence Stith of New Bern were picked by the Governor for elec tion as members of the A&NC fi nance committee. Mr. Larkins, chairman of the State Democratic Executive Com mittee, is a former state senator and a former member of the State Advisory Budget Commission. He served during the 1955 General Assembly as the Governor's legis lative counsel. Controls Two Roads The state controls two railroad j companies- the A&NC and the ( North Carolina Railroad Company. ( The Governor recently had John j Motley Morehead of New York, a r North Carolina native and retired j industrialist, elected president of a the North Carolina Railroad. Mr. Morehead, a Republican, is a grandson of the John Motley Morehead, whose marble bust j j stands in the State Capitol rotun- ? da. The first John Motley More- ] head served two terms as gover- ^ nor and has been called the father j of the North Carolina railroad. The A&NC owns the tracks be tween Goldsboro and Morehead City. The NCRR owns the tracks between Goldsboro and Charlotte. The A&NC's tracks are leased to a private stock corporation, the Atlantic and East Carolina Rail road. The NCRR's tracks are leased to the Southern Railway. The Southern now is seeking per mission from the Interstate Com merce Commission to acquire con trol of the A&EC. Majority Interes't The state owns 72 per cenj, or 12,666 shares of the A&NC stock. The Norfolk Southern owns 15 per cent, or 2,605 shares. Craven County owns 1,293 shares. According to State Highway Pa rolman R. H. Brown, both driv ers were driving along highway >01 toward Beaufort Tuesday at r : 20 a.m. when Gooding, in a 1946 rord pickup truck, started to nake a left turn just as Noe was ittempting to pass him. Noe drove around the Gooding vehicle and hit a truck owned by laymond Dickinson, route 2, New tort. that was parked on the side >f the road. Noe was driving a 949 Chevrolet and the pafked ruck was a 1950 Dodge pick up. Patrolman Brown issued cita ions against both drivers. Adams Creek Accident A speedboat rammed the side of i boat owned by the Ball Brothers Sunday. The accident occurred in \dams Creek. Driver of the speed Mat was treated for injuries but lis identity could not be learned. Truck, Car Crash; Driver Pays Cosh Joe Whitley, Harkers Island, waa assessed coals yesterday morning in Carteret County Recorder' Court by Judge Lambert Morris. Whitley waa charged with (ailing to yield the right of way resulting in an accident The accident took place Monday morning at 8 a.m. on the Lennox ville Road in Beaufort near the Safrit Lumber Co. According to testimony. Mr. Whitley backed his truck across the road into a 1947 Chevrolet driven by Hugh Gordon, football coach at Beaufort High School. Coach Gordon was proceed ing west. . Damage lo the Chevrolet was estimated at $393. Mack Wade of the Beaufort Po lice Department was the investigat ing officer. Whitley was driving a 1941 Chevrolet ton-and-a-half truck.
