A mem ber of the First Baptist Church, New Bern, he is also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, New Bern Consistory, a Shnner and member of Sudan < Temple; he is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodge of New Bern; a state director of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post number 2514 and the American Legion Post 24. having served with the United States Army and Air Force during World War II Mr. Simpkins has been an active member of the New Bern Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Asso ciation through which he has been active in community affairs. He served as general chairman of the drive to secure the Presby terian College for New Bern and was general chairman of the state and national award-winning Ve hicle Safety Check program last year. At present Mr. Simpkins is president of the New Bern-Craven County Safety Council. In recognition of his service to the community. Mr. Simpkins was recently honored with the Jaycee Distinguished service award and was chosen "Young Man of the Year" in New Bern for 1955. Candidates filing against Gov ernor Hodges are not considered serious threats; nevertheless, it is believed that Governor Hodges will establish a campaign headquarters to let voters know that he's inter ested in retaining the office. Governor Hodges became gover nor in November 1954 when, as lieutenant governor, he stepped in to the late Governor Umstead's place.
