Mrs Eastman returned home Monday Mr and Mrs R. M Braithwaite returned over the weekend from West Virginia where they had vis ited for three days with Mr Braithwaite's mother. Mr and Mrs F S. Harris, Paris. France; and Mrs. C. B. Griffin. Concord, visited last week with Mrs. E. G. McKinley. Mrs. Harris. Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. McKinley are sisters. The Harris's are leav ing from New York Monday by Pan American Airways, with which Mr. Harris is affiliated, to return to Paris. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Phillips and children, Mary and Ted, moved last Thursday to their home on Florida Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Quinn, Ke nansville, spent the weekend with Mrs. Quinn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Perry, Crab Point. Mr. and Mrs. W G. Garner and j son, Howard, Greenville, spent the j weekend with Mr and Mrs. G. She I was accompanied by her daughter, i Mrs. Sammie Williams, and a nurse. Latest reports are that she is recovering nicely. Phillips, Greenville, mother of Mrs. Robert Hicks, is recuperating at the home of her son, Mr. T. C. Phillips, Lumberton Mr and Mrs Kenneth N. Willis and children, Joan. Bell, 66, formerly of j Newport, died Tuesday at Pitt Me morial Hospital, Greenville. Mr. Bell, a native of Carteret County, had spent his early life in Newport and was associated with a lumber company there for 20 years. He had lived in Greenville since 1927 and had operated the Bell Coal and Oil Co. since that time. Surviving are his wife, a daugh ter, Pauline Bell, a son, G. J. Bell Jr., Cobb Island, Md., three broth ers, four sisters, and his step mother. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the Memorial Baptist Church, Green ville, and burial followed in Green wood Cemetery. HERBERT L. ARTHUR Herbert L. Arthur, 55, of Bettie died Monday afternoon after a short illness. Funeral services were held in the Welcome Home Free Will Baptist Church, Bettie, at 3 o'clock Wed nesday afternoon with the Rev. Kenneth Gaskill, pastor, officiat ing. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nan nie P. Arthur; two daughters. Burin Completes Work at Baptist Seminary The Rev John Thomas Bunn, son of Dr and Mrs. John H. Bunn has returned to Morehead City af ter completing all work for his Doctor of Theology degree at the Southern Baptiat Theological Sem inary, Louisville, Ky He has received a letter of com mendation from the dean stating that all requirements were com pleted and the doctorate degree would be conferred at the Jflay commencement. During Mr Bunn's years at gra duate school he was made a fellow in the department of speech and for the past two years he was a fellow in archaeology, under Dr William H. Morton, head of the Department of Archaeology, Sou thern Baptist Seminary. Mr. Bunn. with Dr. Morton, plan* to leave Monday, April 2, for the American Schools of Oriental Re scarch in Jerusalem to teach and do research for the summer months He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church at Midway, Ky., before resigning to study abroad Mrs. Bunn and sons, David and Stephen, will remain in Morehead City. Mrs. Matthews Presents Program for Auxiliary Mrs. Bobby Matthews gave the fourth lesson in the mission study at the meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary of St. Andrew's Church Monday night at the civic center. Mrs. Matthews was presented by Mrs. O. H. Johnson Sr. The topic was The Age Between Two Trends, Diversion and Str e. A group of 10, named to pre pare the church for Palm Sunday and Easter, are headed by Mrs. Margaret Greenwood. It was an nounced that the annual meeting of the Diocesan Auxiliary will be held at Fayetteville Sunday and Monday, April 11-12, in St. John s Episcopal Church beginning at 2:15 p.m. April 11. Third Plant Bed Control Set Up The third plant bed disease con trol demonstration has been estab lished on the farm of Otis Godwin, Stella. R. M Williams, county agent, has announced. Other demonstrations are on the farms of John B. Kelly, Newport, and Elmore Smith, Bogue Sound Road. Mr. Williams says weather con ditions have been ideal for spread of blue mold and warns farmers to start treating their beds imme diately. The anthracnose disease has not been reported as yet. he added, but will most likely be present in beds again this year. The same treat ments that prevent blue mold will also prevent anthracnose. In each of the three demonstra tions a new fungicide material is being tried out. The common name of the material is Maneb and is sold under the trade name of Man- 1 zate. Manzate 75, and Dithane M 22 This material is recommended to do an effective job of controlling plant bed diseases, said Mr. Wil liams. Its cost is approximately one half thaf of Fermate which has been widely used by growers for the past several years, he ad ded. Mr. Kelly is using Manzate dust and 10 per cent Dithane Z-78 dust. Mr. Smith is using 15 per cent Fer mate, and 2 per cent Manzate dust; and Mr. Godwin is using 10 per cent Parzate dust and 2 per cent Dithane M 22. In all three demonstrations a check flat will be left in the cen ter of the demonstration to show the effectiveness of the different treatments.
