WITH THE 4-H'ERS By HARRY VENTERS 4 H Advisor Holidays are over and you are trying to get back to your good study habits after the lay-off. I hope that all of you made some New Year's resolutions that will help you in your school work, such as regular study habits. I also hope that you have re solved to take more interest in 4-H work, as this also can be very im portant to you. Four-H training will help to make you good citizens I now and in the future. There is a new 4-H Club record book that some of you will be in terested in. A separate 4-H for age crops record book has been prepared and is available to those of you that are interested in a for age crops project. The need for this type project has been felt for some time. There are increasingly larger numbers of club members who are carrying livestock projects. Since the, cost of production has been steadily in creasing, I'm sure all of you real ize the importance of high quality forage that is grown on the farm. The forage crop record may be taken as a separate project or you may want to keep this record in addition to the livestock record you are already working on. The 4-H forage crop record is in two sections, and you can take one section or both. The first section deals with the establishment of an nual or perennial forage crops and there are six requirements to com plete this section. They are: (1) Plant one or more acres of ladina clover-fescue, fes cue, Kobe or Korean lespedeza, crimson clover, red clover, millet Dr sudangrass with seed or set coastal bermuda grass sprigs; (2) Select the land, prepare the seed bed, fertilize and cultivate the crop according to extension service rec- j Dmmendations; (3) harvest the crop and determine yield and profit or loss made in the project; (4) se MM MISERIES I n MAS MOM! YOU CAN RELY ON 666 lect an exhibit and show it at club or community, or county or state fair; (5) keep an accurate record of all labor and materials in car rying out the project and (8) write a story on 'How 1 Grew My Crop". Section two of the forage crop deals with keeping a maintenance record for perennials. Here you se lect two or more acres of ladino clover, sericia lespedeza, tall fes cue or red clover, depending on the number of animal units in your livestock project, and fertilize and carry out other cultural practices recommended by the extension service. Other requirements for this section are, the same as for section one. Those of you that are interested in this project be sure to let me know at your next club meetings. The Newport 4 11 Clubs will meet first this month, on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Atlantic will meet Thurs day and Markers Island on Friday. Smyrna will meet the next Mon day, Jan. 13 and Camp Glenn and Morehead will meet on Tuesday. Pointers for 4-H boys and girls: A clear skin calls for cleanliness.
