Horn* Demonstration Now* Busy Days Face County Demonstration Women By FLOY G. GARNER Home Agent Busy days and months are ahead (or our Home Demonstration Club women. This will be nothing new for them, however. They stay busy. Since Jan. 1, they have had two leader training meetings, two coun cil meetings, a music workshop, two aluminum etching workshops, and this week a two-day slip cover workshop. At their Council meeting last week, they made plans for sprint" and early sum mer activities: District Council Meeting, April 2; Home Dem onstration and 4-H Fashion Show, May 16; Flower Show, June 6; partici pation in state Floy G. Garner wide UN-iiuzensnip uay program at Raleigh, May 9; attendance at Farm-Home Week in Raleigh, Jane 9-12. The annual 20th District Council meeting will be held in Trenton, Wednesday, April 2, with Jones as hostess county. Mrs. Dewey Jen kins, district chairman, will pre side. Our own Mrs. Dyon Simpson of Bettie Club, and county council president, is district secretary for 1958, and has been nominated for the second vice-presidency for 1959. Lunch will be served by the Jones County Home Demonstra tion Club women, at >123 per plate. Carteret women arc urged to attend this meeting, and join with the club women from Jones, Pamlico, Craven, Onslow counties in reviewing the accomplishments of the past year, and malting plans for future activities. Chairman Visits Here Mrs. Jenkins attended the Coun ty Council meeting last week, and discussed t h e recommendations and resolutions of the state, or ganization, with special emphasis on each county's carrying out these recommendations. She en couraged increased attendance at Fsrrm-Home Week, and reminded the group that the state executive board had recommended that each Home Demonstration Club presi dent and the County Council pres ident, particularly, attend. She suggested that each club strive to have two representatives at Farm-Home Week. Mrs. Jen kins also invited the Carteret wo men to her county for the district meeting. Mrs. Simpson, council president, announced that two county women, Mrs. E. C. McLawhorn and Mrs. John Ives of Harlowe Club, had been chosen by the club women of the eastern district to attend the Woodcarving School in Brasstown, N. C., June 2-14. Mrs. McLaw horn and Mrs. Ives will serve as assistant instructors in woodcarv ing at the District Crafts Workshop at Mantco this summer. Fashion Show May 16 Mrs. W. G. Simpson and Mrs. Charles Stanley, county Home Demonstration clothing leaders, will serve as chairmen of the com mittee to plan the 4-H and Home Demonstration fashion show May 16. They will appoint the. club clothing leaders to assist them. Mrs. Janet Ross of Wildwood Club, county foods and nutrition leader will be in charge of the planning and preparation of the commissioners' luncheon to be held the first Monday in May. This will be a part of our local observance of National Home Demonstration Club Week, May 4-10. Other phases of thia observance will be under the direction of Mrs. Douglass Merrill, county publicity chairman. Club publicity chairmen iwill assist Mrs Marrill r Mrs. Noah Avery, county home beautification leader, will head the committee for making plans and arrangements for the annual Home Demonstration Flower Show June 1 This is a tentative data. LN-Cltizeaskip Day Mrs. R. L. Searle, Mrs. G. T. Spivey, Mrs. D. R Arnold and Mrs. Will Dail, past delegates on trhe UN Tour, sponsored by Home Demonstration Clubs, will attend UN Citizenship Day in Raleigh May ?. Mrs. Will Dail will serve as chairman of the committee, maknig plans (or county participa tion. Different counties in the state are working on individual assign ments for thii program. Each country represented in the United Nations will be portrayed with its flsg and native costume. These flags and costumes are being made by the Home Demonstration Club women of the various counties. Carteret County's assignment is Honduras, and the committee will be responsible for making a min iature flag of this country, and a replica of the native fostume. One of the women attending the pro gram in May will wear this cos tume during part of the day's pro gram. Five chairs were slip-covered in the workshop conducted by Mrs. Catherine C. King, extension spe cialist in housing and house fur nishings, in the home agent's of fice this week. Mrs. King taught the fifteen women attending the proper and practical method of making slip-covers at home. Detailed instruction, with indi vidual assistance was given by Mrs. King. Mrs. Garner, home agent, and Mrs. Milton Piner, county leader in housing and house furnishings, assisted with the work shop. Other women attending were Mrs. Lee Garner and Mrs. Sue Miller, Russells Creek Club; Mrs. E. J. Dennis, Miss Alice Laughton, Mrs. Charles Stanley, Crab Point Club; Mrs. Cicero Taylor, Mrs. Luke Turner and Mrs. E. W. Tem ple, Harlowe Club; Mrs. Bessie Carraway and Mrs. Lois Stallings, Merrimon Club; Mrs. B. O. Ket ner and Mrs. Janet Ross, Wild wood; Mrs. Elmo Smith and Mrs. Leslie Sanders, Broad Creek Club. These women will on request as sist other club women in their local communities with slip-cover ing problems. Home Demonstra tion Club women requested this workshop, feeling that they need to learn all tlicy can to employ their skills and abilities in an effort to stretch the income dollar. They realize and know from ex perience that the more home sew ing and home decorating jobs they do, the more money they can have for other tilings for their families' comfort, health and happiness: The major contribution of orange juice to a diet is vitamin C. And Purdue University nutrition spe cialists say froien orange juice and fresh juice have about the same vitamin C content. CP&L Pioneers To Meet April 11 George Stovall, manager of the Morehead City Carolina Power and Light Co. office, will attend the annual Pioneer Club meeting in Wilmington April 11. The Pio neer Club ia made up of employees with 25 or more yean aervice. Mr. Stovall went to work for the Tidewater Power Co. in 1919 and haa been a member of the Pioneers Club ainc* that company aold out to Carolina Power and Light. C. H. McAllister of Wilmington, area Pioneer chairman, reports that two Pioneera who have re tired during the paat year will be given special recognition. They are John W. Croom of the Wil mington office, and Jeaaie C. In man of New Bern. A total of S4 Pioneers will attend the meeting. Louia V. Mr. and Mrs. James Taylor and children visited her mother, Mrs. Brittle Day, the past weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pilcher and daughter visited her mother, Mrs. Monroe Simpson, Sunday. The Tickle family and his par ents of Bluefield, Va., visited Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Simpson Friday afternoon. The Board of County Commissioners at their last meeting passed the following resolution: "It is hereby ordered that the Tax Supervisor of Carteret County proceed at once according to law to issue the necessary papers and to place the same in the hands of the Sheriff or his Deputies to bring all persons into Court for failing to list taxes for 1958. "It is also ordered that the names of all persons failing to list their taxes for 1958 be published in the Carteret County News-Times."
