Mr. and Mrs. Ivey Chadwick Will Head Order of Eastern Star Mr. and Mrs. Ivey Chadwick Wert installed u worthy matron and worthy patron of Beaufort Chapter lit, Order of Eastern Stir, Wednesday evening at the Masonic Temple. The hall was decorated with yel low flowers and candles, carrying out the incoming worthy matron's colors of yellow and green. The east was decorated with a back drop of yellow, on which the theme, Serving Others, was writ ten In gold letters. The symbol of tlie worthy matron, ft golden sheaf, wis displayed. At each star point was a lattice decorated with flowers in the re spective color of each point. The outgoing worthy matron, Miss Florence Pigott, welcomed the members and visitors. Both she and Mr. Hugh Salter, outgoing worthy patron, expressed their thanks for the cooperation received daring the year. They presented the chapter a ceiling light. Past matron's jewels were pre sented Miss Pigott by her nephew, Joe Pigott. The past patron's jewels were presented by Miss Mildred Whitehurst. Installing officers were Mrs. Frances Turner, district deputy grand matron; Miss Ethel White hurst, marshal; Mrs. Dorothy Piner of Marshallberg, organist; Mr. Garrell B. Moser, worthy grand patron, installing chaplain. Officers installed were Mr3. Margaret Davis of Smyrna, asso ciate matron; .Mrs. Perry Taylor Jr., treasurer: Miss Mildred White hurst, secretary; Mrs. Guion Chad wick, conductor. Mrs. Ronald Earl Mason, asso ciate conductor; Mrs. Burton Dan iels, chaplain; Mrs. T. T. Potter, organist; Mrs. Thomas Beacham, Adah; Mrs. Levon P. Bennett, Ruth. !r Mrs. Billy Downum, Esther; Mrs Lester Pigott, Martha; Mrs. Neil Windley, Electa; Mrs. Homer Lewis, warder; Mrs. Bobby Aus tin, marshal; Mr. Neil Windley, sentinel. The Rev. John Cline, pastor of the Ann Street Methodist Church, offered the dedicatory prayer. Ac ceptance speeches were given by the worthy matron and patron. The newly-installed officers gave a program, Constancy and Faith. Mrs. Jarvis Herring was soloist. Immediately following the pro gram a reception was held in the social hill. Gifts were presented the installing officers and those taking part by Mrs. T. H. Potter. Throe Hostesses Honor Mrs. Nelson a< Shower A stork shower was given Tues day night for Mrs. Clifton Nelson by Mrs. Arthur Stafford. Mrs. L. C. Dickinson Jr. and Mrs. W. A. Cole. Spring flowers were used for decoration. The honoree received a corsage of pink carnations and the hostesses presented her with a diaper set. During the evening games were played. Mrs Sammy Plner, Mrs. Monroe Taylor, Mrs. Bill Taylor and Mrs. Neal Willis won prizes. Refreshments of london fog, cookies, nuts and mints were served. Miss Barbara Harris, East Caro lina College senior, is spending the Easter holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. den Harris. Mrs. G. W. Duncan spent the Easter holidays in Macon, Ga. She accompanied Mr. and Mrs David Beveridge and Miss Lena Duncan on a visit to Mrs. Beveridge's lis ter. Mr Maurice Davis and daughter, Susie, and Miss Martha Clark of Falls Church, Va., spent the week end in Smyrna. Mrs. J. J. Davis, his mother, returned home with them, after spending some time in Falls Church. Bruce Edwards, Ivcy Mason, James Graham and Miss Paula Jones, all students at Wake Forest College, have returned after spend ing the Easter holidays at home. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Hamilton Sr., Mrs. Hamilton Jr. and two chil dren and Mrs. D. F. Merrill spent Monday in Wilmington. Miss Sharon Pasquaele of Golds boro was the weekend guest of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Morning. Her brother, Tony, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. A1 Phillips. The Misses Barbara Allen Davis, Nancy Broda, Jean Chadwlck, and Emma Perry have returned to Woman's College, Greensboro, after spending the Easter weekend at home. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Pittman of Winston-Salem spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Pittman of Merrimon and Mr. and Mrs. Berkley Piner. Dickie Dickinson, a student at the Citadel in Charleston, S. C., spent part of his Easter vacation last week with his mother, Mrs. W. A. Mace Jr. Edward Langston spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Her bert Whitehurst. He is from the Odd Fellows Home in Goldsboro. Braxton Adair entertained members of the Thursday evening bridge club at her home lait week. Prior to bridge she aerved cherry pie and coffee and during progres sions she aerved nuts and candies. Mrs. Johnny Willis won high aeore and Mrs. Tull Williams won low. The club will meet in two weeks at the home of Mrs. Ge?rge Maaaon. Mrs. Julius Taylor and baby son returned home Saturday from Wil mington, where the baby was a patient at Dr. Sidbury's hospital for a week. Mr. A. T. Bowen left yesterday to spend two weeks in Charleston, S. C., with the Air Force Reserve. Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Jones and Miss Jan Davis of Warwick, Va , and Mrs. J. G. Walters and daugh ter, Frances, of LaGrange spent the weekend with Mrs. L. C. Davis and family. Jimmy Parkin has returned to East Carolina College, Greenville, after spending the Easter holidays with his wife and infant son. State Welfare Commissioner Will Soeak at Woman's Club Meetina I Dr. Ellen Winston of Raleigh, state commissioner of public wel fare, will speak at the Beaufort Woman's Club meeting Thursday night at ttw Inlet Inn. The meet ing will begin with a dutch dinner at 6:30. Anyone who is interested in wel fare work is invited to hear Dr. Winston. Dr. Winaton is a native North Carolinian, having been born in Swain County. She received her Ph.D from the University of Chi cago and has held various research positions with a number of federal agencies. She has written exten sively in the fields of social and economic problems. She spent four years as head of the department of sociology and economics at Meredith College, and came from that position to the office of North Carolina Commis sioner of Public Welfare on June 1, 1944. Dr. Winston works actively on a number of state committees and commissions concerned with social welfare. Among her activities on a national basis, she has served as chairman of the Policy Committee, chairman of the Special Committee on Aid to Dependent Children, and as a vice-president of the American Public Welfare Association. She is serving as president of the American Public Welfare Associa tion and was a member of the Fact-Finding Committee for the Mid-century White House Confer ence on Children and Youth. For three years she was a member of the Slum Clearance Advisory Com mittee of the US Housing and Home Finance Agency and has completed a three-year term on the executive committee of the Na tional Conference of Social Work. She served as Chairman of Sec tion 1 of the National Conference of Social Work for 1950-51. She is a past president of the North Caro lina Conference for Social Service. In 1948, Dr. Winston was award ed the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities by the Woman's Col lege of the University of North Carolina. In 1952, she was award ed the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Converse College, her alma mater.
