Farmers' Inb
In Blueberry
Blueberries ? native to North*
America ? ?re on the move as a
cultivated fruit crop. And that'i
of special importance to North
Carolina ? which ranks third In
U.S. commercial blueberry pro
duction acreage. New Jersey and
Michigan rank first and second,
respectively.
Blueberries have been produced
for quite a few years in Carteret
In the Beaufort area. The Stella
section now has blueberry acreage.
Twenty-eight acres have been
planted by John Young, Stella,
and other farmers are showing in
terest in the crop.
In 19S5, an estimated 12,500 acres
of cultivated blueberries yielded
an estimated $11 million, marketed
fresh, canned and frozen. However,
the total value of blueberries in
the U.S. is much greater when
you add the wild blueberries har
vested.
Melvlo H. Kolbe, horticultural
specialist for the N.C. Agricultural
Extension Service, says that se
lectiwi and breeding of superior
varieties are enabling growers to
put a better product on the mar
ket. Hybrids arc being developed
from some of the large fruit va
rietiea and some of the drought
resistant species which may prove
useful in erosion control.
Since different spccies vary in
their climatic requirements, it's
possible to grow blueberries from
Main to Florida. A common char
acteristic of all blueberry varie
ties, however, fs their need for an
acid soil. Also, even though some
varieties are native to swamp and
moist lands, cultivated fields
should be well-drained.
North Carolina's main plantings
are in the coastal area, with a
few being planted in the moun
tains.
The size of blueberry yields va
ries. A single mature plant usually
bears six to eight pints. On good
soils in Michigan, yields from the
second to the sixth year usually
increase from 50 to e.OOO pints per
acre. Yields as high as 9,900 pints
per acre have been known.
