Holland, state commercial 1 fisheries commissioner, reported in I Goldsboro this week on the fish eries picture of January, February | and March. The commissioner t gave his report to members of the , Board of Conservation and De- , velopment. It fellows: , We were very fortunate during | this quarter to have the invaluable , service of the U. S. Fish and Wild- | life boat, the Delaware, with its , trained personnel exploring our off- | shore waters. After the first trip, an oral report was made by Stew- . art Springer and his staff. It was their belief that it would | be possible to take red snapper | with trawl nets as well as with band lines in our ocean waters. , The state also made contacts and secured the services of a large I deep sea clam dredger, the Monte Carlo. Under the direction of Dr. , A. F. Chestnut, (his boat worked , approximately IS days in our ocean - waters trying to find clams in com mercial quantities. Mr. Saunders, the director of our department, upon request from all { of our oyster producing counties, 1 extended the oyster season through J March 10, at sundown. I This action lyas justified on the " grounds that the commercial fish ermen had one of the worst winters fishing experienced in many years. Weeks at a time they were unable to work in our inland waters. Many boats were frozen in and the pound net and set net fishermen were damaged an esti mated one and a half million dol lars; too, the weather made the season late on rock, shad and her ring. Due to the fact that these fish were late in coming in ouf sounds and rivers and that Easter was earlier than usual, the price of fish was affected unfavorably. Good Friday is always the biggest day for the consumption of fish. The deep sea trawlers during this quarter had one of their best sea sons. Of course, the weather had its effect on this type of fishing also, but when the boats were able to work they made good catches. One of the largest catches of croakers ever made in one day in our waters was landed during this period. It was estimated that this catch totalled about one and a quarter million pounds. These boats also made fair catches of trout, ki mullets, flounder! and blow flab. The production of oyiters during :his past season was about 4S.OOO tuba leas than in 1956-57. Thia waa due to bad weather and a more strict enforcement of the cull law. The oyster producing waters of our state had the best catch of spat In many years. If these baby waters live, we ahould have a good harvest-in two years. The oyster leed planting program ia about tinisbed for thia year. We are still carrying on a strict law enforcement program and for this reason more boats have been licensed than in any other like period. Lions Club Gets Double Blessing Before Meal Morrilton, Ark.
