Here again is another Hawk's Corner to let you in oo some of the happenings at NHS. Friday night, May 2, the mem ber* of the junior and senior classes, their dates, members of the high school faculty and their husbands or wives, and other in vited guests, stepped under a beau tiful star-studded sky, to begin a night of fun at the annual Junior Senior Prom. Our theme was Rendezvous of ik. CUn Vavor More has the ' Newport g y m nasium looked as beautiful ai It did that night The junior clau really worked hard to make the pram a suc cess, which we think U definite ly was. It was a nlgkt really worth waiting 11 ycara for. iwtr At precisely 7:30 p.m. the pro gran ?u begun by the mistress of ceremonies and presided of the Junior class, Peggy Wallace. She gave the welcome, "Star Studded," and then introduced the first speaker. Tommy Howard, to give the response, "Twinkle, Twin kle, Little Star." The next speech, "A Night to Remember" was given by Boule Dale Garner. Judy Slaughter gave a humorous speech "Rendesvous Gossip", fol lowing that. The last speech on the program waa "Stairway to the Stars," given by Johnny Mason. After the speeches were finished, we were entertained with two solos, "Star Dust", sung by Gene va Howard, and "Great Balls of Fire" sung by Pat Corbett Johnny Mason presented gilts to the seniors, which were little fun ny things to remind them of some funny incident during their high school years. Mrs. Perry Cart way's seventh grade presented a song "Swinging on a Star", and imitated several of the senior class members. After the program we were treat ed to delicious refreshments. The "Stardusters" from Wilson fur nished beautiful music for us. After everyone had finished eat ing, most of the couples moved out on the floor to dance. Never have you seen such an array of pretty girls, handsome boys, and beautiful evening gowns. Yes, it was truly a night worth watting for and one that will be long remembered. Attends Convention Dr. David Farrior, Beaufort, and Dr. Russell Outlaw, Morehead City, attended the Slst annual con vention of the North Carolina State Optometric Society in New Bern Sunday through Tuesday. By JOIIN O. B. WALLACE Complete separation of living and sleeping areas is achieved in this ranch house by a unique adapta tion of the split level idea to a single level house. Instead of splitting the areas by the use of higher and lower levels, the split idea is carried out by a front-to-back arcade which slices through the center of the house. The end result of the plan, de signed especially for the lions* of the Week series and designated X-8, is a sharp division of activity and sleeping areas. The arcade, itself, is split into three parts ? a covered entry, an entry {oyer and an outdoor living patio ? and all parts are sheltered by a roof. Architect Samuel Paul, who cre ated design X-8, got his inspiration for the underlying concept of this plan from a quotation of obscure or unknown origin: "Neither shall their sleep be dis turbed nor their activity be cur tailed." "This sums it up," Paul says, adding : "One unit consists of rooms where work, dining, recreation, conversation and activity of one sort or another la going on. The activity in this area varies from noixy in the family room to sub dued sounds in the living room. "The other unit consists of sleep ing rooms where quiet and privaey are the prime requisites." Contrasting Use of Space In his arrangement, the architect has made contrasting use- of apace within the two principal areas. An open plan prevails in the ac tivity area, whereas the sleeping area ia enclosed by sharply defined walls. In the activity area, all five rooms flow into each other in a circle of open apace. The circle starts at the entrance foyer, curves toward the living and dining rooms, then into the infor mal dining and family room, the kitchen and the coffee room? then back to the entrance foyer. The curve of the circle ia broken occasionally by aceordian parti tions. The dining room can be ahut off from the informal dining -family room by one partition; the coffee room can be closed off from the entrance foyer by another parti tion. Thus the partitions close off the work and noisy areas from the for mal, quieter area. In the sleeping area, planned carefully for maximum privacy, Engineers Set Hurricane Hearing Date for June 16 A public bearing on hurricane studies affecting the area from Carteret County and tbe coastal areas of Onslow, Pender and New Hanover Counties down to Wrights ville Beach is scheduled to be held by the Corps of Engineers at Beau fort June 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the school. Announcement of the hearing was made Tuesday by Col. H. C. Rowland Jr., district engineer of the Corps' Wilmington District. Colonel Rowland will preside and will be assisted by staff engineers in conducting the hearing. The Beaufort hearing is one of several being held in the state's coastal area for the purpose of assembling information on dam- . ages imposed by hurricanes and ' measures to prevent such dam ages. Colonel Rowland explained that Public Law 71 authorizes and di rects the Secretary of the Army, 1 in cooperation with the Secretary of Commerce and other Federal agencies concerned with hurri canes, "to cause an examination and survey to be made of the eastern and southern seaboard of the United States with respect to hurricanes with particular refer ence to areas where severe dam ages have occurred." This phase constitutes the pre liminary examination which will determine if a detailed survey is warranted. He said further that the law pro- I vides that the survey be made un der direction of the Corps of En gineers and "shail include the se curing of data on the behavior and frequency of hurricanes, and the determination of methods of forecasting their paths and im proving warning services, and of possible means of preventing loss of human lives and damage to property, with due consideration of the economics of proposed breakwaters, seawalls, dikes, dams, and other structures, warn ing services or other measures which might be required." The district engineer added that all interested persons are urged to be present or represented in cluding federal, state, county, municipal agencies, and commer cial, civic, highway interests and property owners concerned. They will be afforded full oppor tunity to express their views con House Design Calls Foe Eight Rooms House of the Week design has eight rooms, 2Vi baths and foyer. The living area includes living room with attached outdoor living patio, dining room, informal din ing-family room, kitchen, coffee room and lavatory. Three bed rooms and two baths are in the sleeping area. The overall dimen sions of the house are 36 by 61 feet. A minimum plot 80 by 100 feet is recommended. There are 1,732 sq. ft. in the living and sleep ing areas. The covered entry has 90 sq. ft., the entry foyer 144 sq. ft., and the outdoor living patio 140 sq. ft. the master bedroom is secluded from all other bedrooms and from all other parts of the house. A bank of closets on one wall creates a buffer between the out door living patio and the master bedroom. Another wall has stag gered studs for insulation to make it sound resistant. A bending bedroom hall likewise contributes to privacy ? no bed room door is visible from the en trance foyer, and the hall bath, ar tificially ventilated, has its en trance door concealed. Glassed-in Entrance Foyer In the arcade, a covered entry leads to the glassed-in entry foyer. Here you can look through a glass wall to the outdoor living patio and beyond into a garden. The kitchen separates the family and coffee rooms ? and a two way fireplace separates the living and dining rooms. Construction economies are achieved by building the sleeping area over crawl space. The arcade is slab on grade with slate floor ing. A full basement is below the living area. Exterior details include a simple roof line, vertical wood siding with large window areas, and roof overhanga. Brick or stone may be substituted for the exterior if de sired. Optional materials are possible for the roof; use either tabbod down asphalt shingles or built-up roof lag with marble chip finish.
