Mr MendenhtU, who operates a
cafe and grill, waa toM (hat the
closing hours of 1 a.m. would have
to be maintained. Mr. Mendenhall
wanted to keep his place open all
night. The board said that if one
place stayed open, all would have
to be allowed to stay open, which
would require hiring additional po
lice officers. That is an expense
the town board said could not be
met at present.
The board said that opening at 4
a.m., as some restaurants do, is
permissible.
Norwood Young, representing his
mother. Mrs. C. R. Young, a cot
tage-owner, said that sand packing
an alley to the cottage is a hazard.
Archie F. Fleming, street commis
sioner, said that the sand would
be moved and clay put on sand at
the sides of the alley to prevent
sand from drifting on the thorough
fare.
The street commissioner also
said that a washout at Atlantic
Boulevard and Raleigh Avenue
would be fixed. It was announced
that the first public hearing on zon
ing the beach would be at 2 p.m.

Letter Read
A letter from H. S. C.ibbs, chair
man of the county ABC board was
read. It commended the town on
the appearance and personnel in
the ABC store.
The clerk was authorized to write
a cottage owner, Mr. Bass, inform
ing him that he had to remove a
wall on town property. The clerk
was also asked to inform Mart
Bell, contractor, that his last year's
contract was being voided and ?2M
remaining to be paid, pending
Bell's completion of certain work,
would be used to hire someone else

Dismissed was the case against
Obrian Lawrence, charged with
violation of a court order. Judg
ment in a case against H. Earle
Mobley was continued.
The state decided not to prose
cute cases against Alton Kendall
Willis, Hoyt Lee, both charged
with violation of the motor vehicle
laws, Jessie Hughes Jr., careless
and reckless driving.
Samuel Coe, charged with non
support, is now serving t prison
term. The court ordered that he
be held when his sentence expires.
The state did not prosecute Paul
R. Johnson or Howard Rose Jr.
due to lack of evidence. Each was
charged with motor vehicle viola
tions.

The Cooperative Savings and
Loan Association opened for busi
ness yesterday afternoon at its
Morehead City home, 923 Arendell
St., following a luncheon at the
Morehead Biltmore Hotel. The
luncheon was attended by civic,
business and social leaders from
Carteret County and eastern North
Caroliaa.
Frederick Willetts, president of
the association, was the luncheon
host. The principal speaket was
W. C. York, North Carolina deputy
commissioner of insurance. Mayor
with speeding; Hazel B. Small and
William Jackson, both charged
with racing and speeding. (

ings and loan association to the
county.
