John Bradshaw Leaves For Cruise to Europe Northern Europe? John W. Brad ?haw, fireman, USN, m of Mr. and Mr*. W. G. Bradshaw of rouU 1 Newport, departed Norfolk, Va., Juno to, aboard tbe destroyer USS Sigourney for a two-month Mid shipman training cruise to Nor thern Europe. During tbe voyage crew mem bers will train Midshipmen in ship board duties and responsibilities they will be expected to assume upon receiving their commissions. Between training exercises the Sigourney is scheduled to visit La Coruna, Spain; Goteburg, Sweden; and Hamburg, Germany. Darmstadt, Germany ? Army Specialist Second Class John C. Smoyer, whose parents live at 301S Arendell St., Morehead City, re cently participated in a field train ing exercise conducted by the 553d Field Artillery Battalion near Darmstadt, Germany. Specialist Smoyer, a member of Headquarters Company of the 37th Engineer Group, entered the Army in January 1952 and arrived in Europe in October 1954. The 24-year-old soldier attended Morehead City High School. Fort George G. Meade, Md ? Army Specialist Third Class Wil liam A. Piner, whose wife, Lois, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Piner, live in Stella, is at Fort George G. Meade, Md., where he is assisting in the training of Re serve Officer Training Corps ca dets. Specialist Piner is regularly as signed as a fire team leader in Company D of the 82d Airborne Division's 505th Infantry at Fort Bragg, N. C., and is scheduled to return there early in August. Piner entered the Army last February. He attended Swansboro High School. Fort Jackson, S. C. ? Pvt. Al pheus E. Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Taylor, route 1 New port. has been assigned to Co. C 4th Bn. 1st Tng. Regt. at Fort Jackson for his basic infantry training. During his basic training he will be taught to fire the M l rifle. Also included in his training will be instruction in such subjects as military courtesy, first aid and personal hygiene. Upon completion of his basic training, he will receive further advanced infantry training or will be assigned to an Army school. July 9? The Rev. Ar thur, seaman apprentice, USCG, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Arthur, Beaulort, has completed 13 weeks of basic training at the US Coast Guard Receiving Center, Cape May, N. J. Arthur entered the Coast Guard last March. Seaman apprentice Arthur will report to his assigned Coast Guard District for further duty. Mrs. Una Hardy of South River was hostess to the Merrimon Home Demonstration Club Monday after noon. There were fourteen mem bers present and one visitor. We were glad to welcome Mrs. Ivel Pittman as a new member to our club. Plans for our August picnic were discussed and committees ap pointed. We will have it at Mrs. Thurman Pittman's on the first Saturday in August. A seafood sup per was decided upon. Mrs. Fannie Wallace and Mrs. Bessie Carraway gave the demon stration on "Quick and easy meals". Our hostess served re freshments of potato chips, wafers, mints, candy and colas.
