Miss Diane Bailey, have returned home from a trip to New York state. Mrs. Bailey's mother, Mrs. B. L. Apple bee of Ossining, N. Y., returned home with them to spend two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Scale of Kan sas City, Mo., and Mrs. Scale's sister from Wake Forest, arrived Friday to spend some time at the Cobb cottage on Atlantic Beach. Dr. and Mrs. Gerald J. Brown and son returned to their home in Westfield Friday after spending a week at Atlantic Beach. Married 66 Yean Mr. and Mrs. John Smith Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, 204 N. 6th St., observed their 66th wedding anniversary Tuesday, July 8, with an open house at their home. The living room, dining room and sun porch were decoraied with red roses, white and yellow chrys anthemums and potted plants, gifis of relatives and friends. The piano and mantel were banked with mag nolia leaves and lighted white ta pers. Mrs. Smith, wearing a violet lace dress and a corsage of white car nations, greeted guests with Mr. Smith. She also wore a pair of earrings given her by Mr. Smith shortly after their marriage Mrs. Guy Hamilton of New Bern, a daughter, welcomed the guests into the dining room where lime punch, salted nuts, mints and cake were served by Mrs. H. W. Haw kins, a daughter, and Mrs. Lionel Smith, a daughter-in-law. The table was covered with a hand - embroidered linen cloth caught at the corners with nose gays of white gladiolas with rib bons and tulle. White gladiolas in a silver bowl flanked wtih lighted tapers in silver candlesticks cen tered the table. Lt. and Mrs. W. G. Dick Hosts at Hawaiian Luau Lt. and Mrs. W. G. Dick were hosts at a Hawaiian luau July 4, given in honor of Cmdr. and Mrs. Roy Hutchins Jr., Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Arthur Sheppard, and Lt. (j g.) and Mrs. Robert Donelly. The luau was given on, the. beaqfo near the Philip Ball cottage. L^a# torches were placed along the sea wall and bonfires were lighted at either end of the area. The forty-five guests came in Hawaiian costume and were pre sented colored leis. Hawaiian mu sic was played in the background during the evening. The long low table on which the luau was served was centered with pineapples and other fresh fruits and straw mats. The food was served in wooden bowls. On the menu were hors d'oeuvres, Chinese egg roll, shrimp and water chestnuts wrapped in bacon, roast pig, barbecued chic ken, baked bananas, lomi salmon, Hawaiian punch and, for dessert, fresh pineapple. During the evening the guests were taken sailing by Mr. Josiah Bailey. Among the guests were Lt. (j.g.) and Mrs. James Connor, Lt. Cmdr. and Mrs. Edward Cassidy, Lt. Cmdr. That's the considered opinion of Jerry Spann, president of the U.S. Chess Federation. Russians are world leaders in chess, notes Spann, and "we think there's a method in the Russian chess madness." Sheriff Hugh Salter said that arson is suspected. There is no electricity in the home and no way the blaze could have started unless it was set, the sheriff remarked.
