George woo * scholarship to camp be ing last year's wildlife projects winner. I know that ? lot of you have wildlife projects, so why don't you be a winner thin year and win * week at camp? Work hard on your project and turn in a good, neat project book. One of the tilings that surprised me mast it the number uf girls who have wildlife projects. Very few, if any girls, in Carteret are taking this project, and I think they are missing a great oppor tunity. There are nearly as many girls here at wildlife camp as boys, and they are all here on scholar ships as wildlife winners from their counties. Girls, wouldn't you like to go next year? One of the outstanding features of tt)is camp is an overnight camp ing trip. We left camp Thursday morning and visited Craggy Gar dens, Mt. Mitchell, and the Mt. Mitchell conservation area. At night we found ourselves at Crab tree Meadows. Crabtree Meadows is a picnic and camping area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It received its name because of the beautiful crabtrecs that must really be a wonderful sight when they are in bloom. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sewell Jr. ?f SM&WS! i!"* Crabtree Falls are alio here and a splendid light they are aa they tumble W feet After a wonderful outdoor tup per and one of the most impres sive vesper services ever put on by 4-H'ers, we slept in sleeping bags furniihed by the camp. Everyone had a wonderful time on this overnight tour. The purpose of this camp or conference is to teach boys and girls wildlife conservation. As we enjoy this conference, the beauty and grandeur of this wonderful mountain region, the clear streams, with an abundance of game, fish and wildlife, we realize that except for the forsightedncss and untiring efforts of people in terested in wildlife conservation, this pictvire would not prevail. The 4 -H cosnervation program provides you an opportunity to im prove and perpetuate God-given natural resources for your own en joyment and the enrichment of generations that follow. I'd like to tell you more about wildlife camp and about State 4-H Club Week which was last week, but I'll have to do that later. Right now it's time for swimming so I'll have to close. THE HAPPY TIMES N*w*pap?r for Boy* end Girls HI D * If* ftfytium Three Princesses pt White land (Last week's story: A young lad was pulled Id hia fishing boat, by some unseen force, to Wkileland. There he met aa old Biaa who told him he would find three Princesses, buried up ta their necks in the ground. He was warned not to go near the first two, but to speak only to the third. And now, on with our story). When the lad came to the first Princess, she called out to him and begged him so prettily to come to her, but he passed on as though he did not see her. In the same way he passed the second, but to the third Princess he went straight UP . . "If you'll do what I bid you," she said, "you may have which of us you please." Yes, he was willing enough; so she told him how three Trolls had set them down in the earth there, but before, they had lived in the castle up among the trees. Three More Join Birthday Club The Birthday Club welcomes | three new members this week, one | of them little Randolf Eugene Wil- j lis, who is living in Germany be cause his daddy is stationed there with the Air Force. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Willis, formerly of More head City, and the grandson of Mrs. Clara Wade, Morehead City. Randolf will be 3 Aug. 17. Our other new members are Fill more Lawrence. Harkers Island, who was 6 on Tuesday, and Joanna Hill, Newport, who was 5 Sunday. We're happy to have these new members and invite them to ask their friends and playmates to join. All they have to do is fill in the Birthday Blank on this page. The more the merrier, so why not join today? Joanna tUU Fillmore Lawrence Randoir WHHt "Now," she said, "you must go into that castle and let the Trolls whip you one night for each of us. If you can bear that, you'll set us Weil, the lad declared that he was ready to try. "When you go in," the Princesi went on to say, "you'll see two lions standing at the gate, but if you'll only go right in the middle between them, they'U do you no harm. Then go str aight on into a little dark room a.id make your bed. "Then the Troll will come to My Little Kitten ?rw*?>uw! 1 .'Mma&wjim Jeanne Gay Hancock I have a little yellow and white kitten. His name is Ice Cream Face. He is as fuzzy as he can be. I like to feed him very much. Every night I let him outdoors. He comes to the door every morn ing and begs to come in. He always wants something to eat. So I give him some milk and meat. Some nights when I go to bed he comes and gets in bed with me. I like kittens. Do you? ? Jeanne Gay Hancock (Jeanne is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hancock, Stacy). whip you; but if yoy take the flask which hanjs on the wall, and rub yourself with the ointment that's in it, wherever his lash falls, you'll be as sound as ever. Then grasp the swor<J that hangs by the side of the flask and strike the Troll dead." Yes, he did as the Princess told him; he passed in the rajdst be tween the lions, as if he hadn't seen them and went straight into the little room and there he lay down to sleep. The first night, there came a Troll with three heads and three rods, and whipped the lad soundly; but he stood it till the Troll was done. Then he took the flask and rubbed himself, and grasped the sword and slew the Troll. So, when he went out next morn ing, the Princesses stood out of the earth up to their waists. The next night 'twas the same story over again, only this time the Troll had six heads and six rods, and he whipped him far worse than the first. But when he went out the next morning, the Prin cesses stood out of the earth as far as the knee. The third night there came a Troll that had nine heads and nine rods, and he whipped and flogged the lad so long he fainted away. Then the Troll took him up and dashed him against the wall, but the shock brought down the flask, which fell on the lad, burst and spilled the ointment all over him, and so he became as strong and sound as ever again. Then he wasn't slow; he grasped the sword and slew the Troll. And the next morning when he vent out of the castle the Princesses stood before him with all their bodies out of the earth. | So he took the youngest for his Queen, and lived well and happily with her ever after.
