Engineers Rate English, Speech Tops in Importance Engineers who graduated from Purdue University in the years 1911 through 1956, 90 per cent of whom have followed the profession for which they were trained, have put a great big exclamation point behind the importance of a good basic education. Among courses most frequently mentioned as "musts" by the 3,800 who participated in a study under taken by the university, speech, English composition, economics and psychology were most fre quently listed. Ranked first among educational goals was the ability "to express one's thougths effectively," which accounts for the emphasis on speech and English. Ranked second among the goals was the acquisition and use of "the skills and habits involved in criti cal and constructive thinking," which is generally considered a major goal of a liberal arts course. "How to get along with people" came in third and evidently ex plains the interest in psychology.
