Attempt* Wake of Passing Vessel Swamps Small Outboard At 4:39 p.m., Sunday afternoon, Aug. 3, four men from the tide water area were trying a little fishing in a 15 foot outboard near the channcl some two miles off Newport News Point. One minute later, the boat was Iwampcd by the wake of a passing tcsscl. Us oceupants were thrown Into the water where they re mained for two-and-a-half gruel ling hours. It took the Coast Guard only 12 minutes to get a 40-foot patrol boat to the scene, but it had been two hours before the distress was observed and the Coast Guard had been notified. Once in the area, the rescue boat was able to pick up the survivors, right the out board, and aecure a tow line all within IS minutes. Not 'Unlucky' By 9 p.m., the four fishermen? wet, weary but well? were deliv ered to the dock at Port Norfolk. They didn't have any fish, but no one could *ay they had been un lucky. Only a few hours before this case, the Coast Guard Lifeboat Station at Virginia Beach had made a tragic report to the Fifth Coast Guard District Rescue Co ordination Center in Norfolk. The beach's frequently rough surf and dangerous undertow had claimed their first drowning victim of the summer season, a 28-year-old male tourist. Although this was the only death of the weekend, there were the usual numerous close calls. Ear lier in the week, a sudden thun derstorm put two boats in distress within four minutes in the Ocean View area of Norfolk. In Case No. 393, a boatman Jumped from his disabled outboard and awam the 150 feet to the beach. Sail Boat Swamped At approximately the same time, a sail boat was swamped with three passengers aboard about three miles off Ocean View. A Coast Guard 30-foot patrol boat ar rived immediately and towed this craft to safety to close case 395. Among the other incidents of the weekend were four which would normally be put in the inexcusable category. A fishing vessel ran out o < fuel in the York River, and other boats went aground in the Upper Chesapeake Bay, the Sou thern Branch of the Elizabeth River, and the Sinepuxcnt Bay (near Ocean City, Maryland). All told, on the first weekend in August there were 42 search and rescue cases coordinated by the Fifth Coast Guard District. In 1956, this figure would have been the highest in Coast Guard history. Last year, it would have been well above the normal expected work load. But by this year's standards, a total of 42 cases waa a relatively light weekend. After July's record of 415 inci dents, which was an astounding 60 cases above the previous high, the Coast Guard hopes that the relatively slow start in August represents a trend. Sooner or later, it is hoped, the boating public's vast increase in numbers will be matched by a similar increase in courtesy, caution, and competence on the water.
