Tlw How? o* *>?? W? k This Home Features Open Interior Court Taking its theme from ancient Roman architecture, this contem porary. one-story House of the Week features an atrium as an at tractive. patio-like area inside the perimeter of the plan. In early Roman homes, the atrium became the core of family living because it served so many important functions. In this mod ern adaptation, the atrium has both functional and esthetic appeal. Designated X-21 in the House of the Week series of outstanding American homes, the plan is espe cially suitable to a narrow lot be cause of its front to back arrange ment. The overall width of the house, with its seven rooms, is only 48 feet and it can be built on a 65 by 100 foot lot. The family room, the living room and the kitchen all abut the atrium, creating a feeling of out door-indoor living. The atrium is open to the sky. Thus the position of the sun cre ates different shades and shadows within the atrium and reflects light in such a way that it results in changing color nuances in the house itself. In this plan, created by Archi tect Samuel Paul, the atrium fits the modern concept of living. It creates a warm, welcoming atmos phere upon entering the house and it gives light to the surrounding rooms. Abundant Features There are many other features in design X-21: The living room has a fireplace with a wrought iron hood, and a hearth which continues beyond the fireplace proper. The hearth in tersects the exterior glass wall and continues into the rear terrace. The entire fireplace wall is of natural brick. In warmer climates, the fire place may be eliminated. There is a covered rear terrace off the living and dining rooms, suitable for dining, entertaining and lounging. The kitchen, designed with a side For All Horn* Improvement Needs SEARS Catalog Sal?? The bedroom wing has three am ple-sized bedrooms, two full baths and abundant closet space. Adja cent to the master bedroom is a private terrace which is sealed off at the front by a decorative, gar den wall. The exterior of the house is a combination of wood, glass and brick. The roof is of white mar ble chips, which reflect sualight. Design X-21 has no basement and no attic. The house can be built on slab over grade or with crawl space ? a major cMt-cuttlag tea tare. The vital statistics of the h?uie, as a handy guide for estimating the cost of construction in your area, follow: The overall dimensions are 48 by 62 feet 4 inches. The habitable area has 1,551 square feet. The atrium has 185 square feet. The two-car carport has 515 square feet. The plan has three bedrooms, two baths, dining room, living 1 room, kitchen, family room and I atrium. Expertly planned, this it the door plan of House of the Week de sign X 21. Sanitary Restaurant Will Build Decks over Water Capt. Tony Seamon and Ted Gar ner, owners of the Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant, announce* Saturday plans to enlarge the res taurant. The contract was let Thursday for concrete piling for the addi tion. It will consist of two decks over the water, one on top of the other, continuing the entire length of the building. Two hundred persons will be the capacity of each deck, bring ing the restaurant's total seating capacity to 650. "I think our customers are due this," Captain Tony said, "we've, had a line of people waiting to get in every day but one the last two weeks." Thomas Eure, Beaufort contrac tor, will put down the pilings. This is expected to be done by Nov. 1. The foundation is scheduled to be complete by Dec. 1, with the en tire new structure ready to open by Feb. 15. Another kitchen will be installed, making two kitchens. New equip ment will include electronic ovens which will broil fish just as quick ly as they are fried at present. An all-electric dishwasher is another improvement on the list. This past summer eight persons were washing dishes ? the speed rate being, wash, rinse, sterilize and dry a dish a second. Dishes broken this summer: 200 dozen! The electric dishwasher is expect ed to cut the breakage rate. A flight of stairs will lead from the first deck to the second. A dumb waiter will carry food from the first floor to the second and take down dishes cleared from the tables. "People always want to sit out over the water," the restaurant owners say. "They'll sit some where else, but don't like it. Pleas ing our customers is our sole aim, that's why we're going to make the improvement." The Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant went into its present building nine years ago. The decks new over the water were built three years ago. This summer a parking lot, across from the res taurant, was constructed for the convenience of customers. How the Romans Used Atrium The atrium used in the daya of the Romans was an important re quirement in dwellings. Basically, it was an open court exposed to the sky and it served many functions. Guests were re ceived and welcomed in this area. Business affairs were conducted and general family living took place in the atrium. The ancient atrium always included a little pool called the impluvium, which caught rainwater. Often a hearth was included, creating a feature similar to the outdoor fireplace of today. In this adaptation of the atrium, a pool is used to collect the roof drainage, thereby making the poo) functional as it was in the days of the Romans.
