The Rev. Dr. A. J. Hobbs, sup
erintendent of the New Bern dis
trict of the North Carolina Meth
odist Conference, met some of the
leaders of the church Friday morn
ing, Sept. 5, to begin organization
for the Christian Higher Education
campaign. This campaign, having
?S its purpose the establishment
of two Methodist colleges in east
em North Carolina, will culminate
at tbe close of the calendar year.
W. B. Chalk has been appointed
a member of the planning com
mittee for the district.
Seven pastors and seven out
standing laymen will be members
of this committee. The pastor, Mr.
Herbert, is one of the pastors on
this committee. Mr. Dixon and
Walter Freeman have been ap
pointed as members of the Special
Gifts Cemmittee of the district.
Other leaders for this campaign
will be announced as the organiza
tion for the local church is com
pleted. A local church campaign
Chairman and six or nine mem
bers of the local church commit
tee will be announced next week.
The Christian Higher Education
campaign will seek to raise five
million dollars throughout the con
ference by the first of January
This will match the five million
dollars that was raised by the com
ra lenities of Fayetteville and Rocky
Mount last yaar.
The two new colleges are to be
established at these two cities. The
names of the colleges will be the
Methodist College at Fayetteville
and the Nort'.i Carolina Wesleyan
College at Rocky Mount. Already
the two institutions have been or
ganized. A president and board
of trustees are already function
ing for Methodist College at Fay
etteville. A vice-president and
board of truster's are functioning
for North Carolina Wesleyan Col
lege at Rocky Mount. It is antici
pated that each of these colleges
will be open for day students with
in two years. The North Carolina
Methodist Conference, in establish
ing two colleges it breaking all
records of the denomination. In
deed, it has been quite a few years
since a new Methodist college has
been organized in the United
States.
Bishop Paul N. Garber. leader
of Methodists in the state, is given
much of the credit for this ad
vance in higher Christian educa
tion in North Carolina. It is esti
mated by higher education lead
ers that by 1878 the number of
students applying for entrance to
colleges in North Carolina will be
double the present figure.
This means that even with two
new colleges in the conference
boundaries, still there will not be
the facilities to receive all the
young people applying for entrance
to Methodist colleges. The Meth
odist church leads all denomina
tions in America in the number
of institutions for higher educa
tion that have been established.
