Miss Kirk is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. F. E. Kirk of Beaufort.
In high school she was chaplain
and president of the Tri-Hi-Y, sec
retary and treasurer of the student
council and district vice-president
Of the student council association.
She was a sophomore marshal,
clasc secretary for two years, and
vice-president of the school prayer
gnup. Her senior year she was
among the superlatives voted by
other class members.
At Mara Hill she was first vice
president of the Baptist Student
Union, chaplain of the Clio Literary
Society, a member of the Choral

School Opening Brings New
Teachers, Lunchroom to BHS

"Have becks, wtfl Mdyl" is the
calling card of every chick and
child Wtween the ages of 14 end
It wha last Tuesday presented
themselves to enroll at BHS for
the im-91 term.
Par the seniors it was a wonder
ful experience, because this was
the fltst tlmo they had legally
walked up the front steps and in
the front door, while the freshmen
meekly crept around the building
and through the back door.
The sophomores for the first
time could show their superiority
over the freshmen, while the jun
iors enviously watched the seniors.
The high school wishes to wel
come three new teachers to the
faculty; Mrs Newman, Mr. Jones
and Mr. Smith. We hope that this
year will be most enjoyable for
them U I lit sure it will be for
us.
This year the cheerleaders are
peppier than ever under the direc
tion of Berta Fodrie. In addition
to three oif last year's girls we
have three -new ones Namely,
Nancy Huntley, Claudia Taylor,
and Mimi Gilchrist.
We are looking forward to hear
ing them sound off at the first
home game.
What a wonderful way to start

With Meeting on Monday
The Smyrna PTA held its first
meeting of the year Monday eve
ning at 7:34.
"Maturity Through Understand
ing Your School" was the topic
discussed by the Rev. D. M. Ty
son, pastor of the Smyrna and Wil
liston Methodist Churches.
Mrs. Elmer Willis, president,
presided at the business meeting.
Since Smyrna Consolidated School
is composed of nine communities
it was decided that instead of hav
ing a regular program committee,
each community would tare p pro
gram chairman and each would
be responsible for one PTA meet
inf by having the devotional, a
program, and serving refresh
ments. We hope this will creatc
more Interest In the meetings.
After the business, Stewart Dan
iels, principal, gave an Interesting
talk and outlined plans for the
year. He introduced the new teach
er*.
Mrs. Willis gave a talk on the
East Carteret High School propos
al. She enumerated the advantages
of the consolidation program.
The parent* visited the teachers
in their child's classroom far 15
minutes, after which a reception
was held in the .lunchroom for the

Relief Fund Projects
Members of the ladies auxiliary,
Veteran* of Foreign War*, met
Thursday night at the VFW build
ing and discussed project* to build
up the auxiliary's relief hind. The
relief fund Can be spent only for
veterans who are tick, or for ho*'

ciently.
The grapevine whispers of ano
ther big show on the way, to be
put on by the Glee Club, possibly
sometime in October.
I am looking forward to writing

Woman's Club Discusses
Mans, Projects for Year
The Beaufort Woman's Club
opened the new year with a dinner
meeting at the Inlet Inn Thursday
night. Mrs. G. W. Duncan, presi
dent. presided.
Looking Backward and Forward
was the topic Of the program. Mrs.
Charles W Davis gave the "back
ward" portion and several mem
bers told of interesting things they
had done during the summer. The
Old Homes Tour was evaruatcd by
Miss Grace Wilson, Mrs. D. F.
Merrill and Mrs. Joe House.
Mrs. G. W. Duncan reported that
two folders had been prepared for
distribution. One is on the ceme
tery and the other on old homes.
Postcards picturing old homes are ;
also on sale.
The "forward" part dealt with
plans for the coming year and
broadening the club project of
making Beaufort an historical cen
ter. The city beautiful project was
also mentioned.
Mrs. Duncan read the list of
committee chairmen and named a
new committae, the courtesy com
