Harry J. Jarvis Left Barbering To Run Fish Business at Englehard Sjr WAPR LIT AS Englehard? When Harry J. Jar vti took off a day back in 1844 Irom hit job of cutting hair and shaving people in a Belhaven bar bershop and made MO the first time he went ahrimping, he de veloped a "fever". With the $40 in his pocket, Jar vis decided to quit his barber job and become a commercial fisher man Since that day in 1944 Jarvis has been in the fish, oyster, shrimp, and crab business. He very quickly says he has not made $40 a day every day since that tune, but he apparently has done well with his processing plant here. Now 50 and a chain cigar smok er, he is also an optimist. Eaaplays M Jarvis, who employs around Ml people, mostly women, processes trabmeat for markets in Norfolk, Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. Jarvis is a rugged individualist. He has his own ideas about com mercial fishing. It has provided him with a goad living sinte he took back his plant some years ago after he had leased it to "some amart Yankees from Long Island, N. Y., who lost $11,000 because they sat in the office too much ?ad did not know what was going on." Shows Scoffer He likes to recall how a certain commercial fisherman scoffed at the small boat Jarvis used when he went into commercial fishing. "That fellow poked a lot of fun ?t me, but I showed him what a man can do by not being afraid to get down and work along and with his own employees," he ad ded. Operating all year, Jarvis also makes a fish meal, which he sayi has a high protein content and which he exports to several states through a Philadelphia broker. Harry Jarvis believes in doing the best be can even when fish, abrimp, oysters, and hard crabs are searee. "I believe the good Lord will help those who try to help themselves," he addled.
