Three County Cattlemen Buy Calves at Supervised Sales B, BOB WTMOtJB nm farmers bought calve* at the Mate-supervised feed er calf ?ale? ?< Goldiboro and Rocky Mount this summer. County agent It. M WUUams predicts that these progressive cattlemen will aucceed in their ventures so well that other county farmers will fol low their example. Dion Simpson of Bettie bought flra calves at the Rocky Mount sale aat added them to this herd of home-grown stock. He is planning to feed out 14 calves this winter and next summer Mr- fliwp nr has IS head of stock at his farm in Bettie and 16 head In a pasture at North River. A large percentage of his investment is in s purebred Hereford bull "A boll is half of a man's herd," Mr. Simpson points out. "In order to produce first quality calves, a cat tleman must have a top-notch bull.'* Another cattleman who has found the fowler calf sales a good source el stock la William Lewis who lives In Morahead City but farms a place fit Harlowe. Mr. Lewi's bought 10 heifer calves at the sales and he plans to keep all of them for breeding purposes. He bought a bull from Morton Da vis of Morehead City and hopes to begin selling calves of his own within a couple of years. The largest beef cattle operation in the county is that of Ralph Thomas, North River. Mr Thomas has 100 calves on Permanent pas ture now. He plans to sell the ani mals at sales next fall Mr. Thomas began his program in the fall of IK*, planting pastures and building fences and sheds. He put in his first calves (100) the rext year and sold them last fall. He sold his second lot of calves this falMr. Thomas has 160 of his 300 acres in permanent pasture. He feels that permanent pasture is the answer to the catUem.n'. wiMer feeding problem In this part of the St "'with the mild weather we have here In the winter, cattle can graze year-round. Of course I keep plen_ ty of hay and other feed on hand just In case something happens to the pasture, but it is really eco nomical to put cattle on year round pasture and know they will get plenty to eat,' he declared,^ In commenting on the fe*jjer c,lf sales, Mr. Thomas said, "The qual ity of the North Carolina calves sold In these sales is to good that, many out-of-state buyers are com " "Oalte a namber of calves from these sales went to the mid-west for feeding out. The prance of out-of-state buyers into the picture boosts the prices l<*d breeders get for their calves and encourages them to produce even better calves," he says. Mr. Williams, while anxious to see more county farmers rai?ng beef cattle, warns that raising Cattleman Ralph Thomas, mounted, stops his work for a moment to Ascuss the date cattlemen's association with county agent R.
