Fishing will have Its definite nps and downs for the remain der of the fall, but there will be many days of excellent fishing such as Friday, when drift fish ermen from B. J. White's re ported a total of IN flounder. Or Saturday when, in spite of a day that ended in a dismal rain, king mackerel fishernffen had all they wanted of 16- to 20-pound kings. A summary of the year's events; bookings last spring were far ahead of previous years, but the weather didn't co operate. Fishing didn't really get underway until June beeaise of extremely cold water. Red snappers this year were virtually destroyed. Sea bass and porgies from the headboats were uncommonly good all season. Cobia fishing was terrific for a long peroid (a couple of 40-pound ers were picked up offshore only last week). in June the Headlines read "New Marlia Grounds?" Later there was aa question nark, for Morehead City blue marl In be came the talk at the east coast, b our first season of marlta flshhg, 28 were eaaght la leas than ? weeks. Ocean pier fishermen caught onto a new gimmick this year: float fiahing with live bluefish for king mackerel. By mid-August over 120 bad been caught from the four piers; when the fall kings moved in the score toonfed up. This reminds as of the first tarpoa, eaaght la early Jaly, aa 87-pounder measuring nearly ( feet Schools of haodreds have been sighted; many were i hooked. Sailfishing was better than aver age. This waa partly due to the heightened Interest la bUlfishing caused by the discovery of rich marl in grounds. Drift fishing far floaafcr was excelleat. 1 ashore fishing far Maes aad Spanish waa erratic throagh maat of the seasoa, al though soma terrific catches were made. Restaurants have had the best season aver, and thara bava boon ? more fishermen on the streets than ever before, despite a na tionwide recession that continued through the summer. Due to fishermen and tourists, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach were virtually unaffected fcy national business conditions. It has been a good year.
