and in Augusta they visited Mr.
Bell's brother.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Parkin
III left Thursday for Detroit,
Mich., where they will make their
home. Mr. Parkin was transferred
there by the Coast Guard.
Mrs. H. G. Loftin left Saturday
to visit Mr. and Mrs. Thornton
Harrison in Norfolk, Va. She will
return home tomorrow.

Jackson, S. C , spent the weekend
here with his family.

David John Hall, 90, of the Gales
Creek community died suddenly at
his home Saturday evening. Fu
neral services will be conducted
at 2 30 this afternoon it the New
port Church of Christ with the Rev.
Tom Roberts officiating. Burial
will be in the Gales Creek Cem
etery near the home.

home and Mrs. R. J. Mann of High
Point; six sohs, Major of Fort

ELVIN SALTER
Elvin Salter, 65, of Sea Level
died at his home yesterday morn
ing. He was a member of the Sea
Level Methodist Church, ? veteran
of World War I, and a life resi
dent of this county.
Funeral services will be con
ducted at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the
Sea Level Methodist Church by
the Rev. W. R. Hale and burial
will follow in the Styron Cemetery.
The body will lie in state one hour
prior to the service.
Mr. Salter is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Stella Gasldll Salter;
two daughters, Mrs. David Salter
of Sea Level and Miss Alma Mae
Salter of the home; three sons,
Elvin G. and Frederick C. of
Greenville and William E. of the
home; one sister, Miss Nor* Sal
ter of the home; and three grand
children.

Program on Education

man's Club meeting Thursday eve
ning at the Inlet Inn. Mrs. Brock,
who will be introduced by Mrs. G.
W. Duncan, will speak on Modern
Trends in Education.
The meeting will begin at 6:30.
Any teacher in the county who
would like to hear Mrs. Brock is
invited to the meeting. The cost
of the dutch dinner prior to the
program is $1.50. Those wishing to
attend the dinner should call Mrs.

Bridge Club Thursday
Mrs W. L. Woodard entertained
her bridge club Thursday evening
at her home, using lovely arrange
ments of fall flowers throughout
the room. Miss Annie Morton was
an invited guest.
Mrs. James Rumley won high
score and Mrs. N. F. Eure won
low. Both were presented milk
glass flower containers.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester D. Carley
of Berlin, Wis., welcomed a 7
pound 14 ounce son, Danny Alan,
Oct. 21. They have two other s&ns,
Keith, 4, and Stevan, 2. Mrs. Car
ley is the former Iris Dudley of
Beaufort.

o'clock Saturday, Nov. 1, at At
lantic Methodist Church.
The Rev. W. W. Clarke Jr. of
I Ocracoke, brother of the bride
groom, officiated at the double
ring ceremony. The church was
decorated with two baskets of
white gladiolas, an arch entwined
with chrysanthemums and green
ery, and four candelabra holding
lighted tapers.
Nuptial music was presented by

I fort, organist, and Mr. Garland
Morris of Cherry Point, soloist,
who sang Because and Wedding
Prayer.
The bride was given in marriage
by her brother-in-law, Mr. Charles
H. Cox of Tampa, Fla. She wore
a floor length gown of bridal satin
and lace made by her mother and
sister.
The bodice of satin featured an
over-bodice of lace and long
sleeves. The skirt fell from pleated
fullness at the waist and featured
a lace panel, embroidered with se
quins and pearls, down the front.
The skirt extended into a train
edged with lace embroidered with
sequins and pearls.
Her fingertip veil fell from a
crown of pearls and sequins and
she carried a prayer book topped
with a white orchid and showered
with white feathered carnations.

! the bride, was matron of honor.
She wore a ballerina length gown
; of autumn green crepe with match
j ing net headpiece and satin shoes.
! She carried a colonial nosegay
' of bronze and yellow chrysanthe

Birthday at Open House

her 98th birthday Sunday witt a*
open house for all her friends
A family dinner, attended by
about forty members of her fam
ily, was given at her home Satur
day evening.

themums and a three-tiered birth
day cake, which was cut by the
honoree
Friends who called Sunday were
served refreshments of decorated

the late Mr. Clarke. He is em

ment at Cherry Point Marine Air

Legal Notice on Bond
Issue Appears Today
Appearing in the legal section
of today s paper is the notice of
the intention of the county to bor
row $2,5Q0,000 to construct schools.
It refers to a "six-month" school
term because that is the way the
state constitution is drawn. Bond
attorneys say that is the way the
notice must be worded.
Waterways
Work Approved
Commissioner Harrell Taylor an
nounced yesterday afternoon at the
county board meeting that a meet
in# will be held Friday at the Sea
Level Inn to collect information
on waterways projects in this area.

engineers will conduct a hearing
in December on the Pamlico Sound
to Beaufort harbor area and .ill
side channels. The county board
endorsed Improvements to the wa
terway on both old and new pro
jects.
At tlie request of Marvin Willis,
Smyrna, the board agreed to sell
15 acres of property in Straits
township for which the county has
held a deed since 1944. The prop
erty will be advertised and sold
to the highest bidder.
Formerly in the name of Taul
Jones, Beaufort, the land has taxes
for 1940 and 1941 owing on it,
amounting to $1398
Tfce board approved applications
for beer licenses by C. R. Dixon,
Aubrey Mason and taamon Junior
Corbett. Rejected was the applica
tion of Lila Mary Bennett.
Commissioner Skinner Chalk
pointed out that the board has no
choice but to approve application
for beer licenses if the reputation
and character of the applicant is
considered good.
Approved were expenses of $39 42
for the past month for the Civil
Defense director, John Valentine.
Mr. Valentine also requests $80 a
month for operation of the CD of
fice, funds for a car and for a
communications set up.
The clerk, Odell Merrill, was re
quested to write Mr. Valentine and
explain that major expenditures
cannot be made for Civil Defense
since no provision was made for
them in the current budget.
