T? n Topics Thanksgiving Project Sponsored By Hi-Y; Betas Elect Officers s By ANN 8ANDERSON The Hi-Y sponsored a very wor thy Thanksgiving program this year. They collected canned (oodi to help needy families in the com munity. Each home room waa furnished with a box to fill with food. They chose "I gave, have you?" as their slogan. The Beta Club met last week and elected the following officers: Bud Daniels, vice-president, and . Annette Cooper, treasurer. The program wal presented by 1 Dixie Parker on What Beta Mem 1 bership Means, and the by-laws of the constitution were read for the benefit of the new members. The new members then received their membership certificates and their pins. The meeting was closed with the Beta song. The junior and senior Tri-Hi-Y's met last Thursday at the civic ccntcr. At the meeting they decided to name the junior Tri-Hi-Y the Sig ma Tri-Hi-Y and the senior Tri Hi-Y the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y. Both clubs met together for the program period. New officers elccted for the Sig ma Tri-Hi-Y are: President, Anne Herbert; vice president, Sylvia Thompson; sec retary, Donna Anderson, and treas urer, Beth Hayo. Senior in the spotlight this week is Virginia Lou Smithwick, bet ter known as "Genny Lou." Genny Lou is really a "Jack (?) of all trades." While in high school she has been an important mem ber of the basketball team and is captain this year. She is also in the Beta Club, the Latin Club, the FTA, on the annual staff and on the student council. Because she is always talking her favorite saying is "y'all." Being 5' 7" and 123 pounds, she is a good size for basketball. Tops on her list of favorites arc spaghetti, sailing, Tommy Ed wards and It's All In The Game. Looking in the crystal ball, fore most in her future is Truman. She is also planning to study at Rex Hospital in preparation for nurs ing. Advent Communion There will be a communion at 11 a.m. Sunday, the first Sunday in Advent, in St. Timothy Lutheran Mission, west of Havelock. Advent is the first Sunday of the church year, the Rev. County Teachers Attend Conference in New Bern The vocational home economics teachers of Carteret County, Mrs. David Beveridge of Beaufort, Mrs. Margaret Gibson of Atlantic, and Mrs. D. Cordova of Morehead City, attended a conference of home economics teachers from five counties at New Bern High School Saturday. A discussion on how Future Homemakers could obtain a state degree was led by Mrs. Mabel Hall of East Carolina College. Mrs. Nancy Paul of Aurora told about the techniques and materials used in adult education courses. After lunch in the home econom ics rooms, Miss Mamie Miller of New Bern told the Christmas story illustrating each symbol of Christmas with something one could make, and explaining the meaning of each symbol. Among the articles she exhibited were trees of various materials, wreaths, packages wrapped with last year's papur, cards and rib bon, handmade gifts, arrange ments of dried and other mater ials, a table covered with a red cloth with Santa, his sleigh and reindeer as the motif for a family dinner with children. Door hangings as welcome to visitors at the Christmas season were made of corn husks to sym bolize that Christ was born in a manger. Last she showed the man ger scene with the Holy family and others. Vocational home economics teachers were present from Beau fort, Carteret, Hyde, Pamlico and Craven counties. Mrs. Harrell is Hostess At Lanier Club Meeting The Lanier Book Club met at the civic center on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Robert Harrell as hos tess. The fourth in the study of fa mous romances was given by Mrs. Lucile Arthur Smith. She spoke on the romance of Henry VHI and Ann Boleyn. During the social hour that fol lowed the meeting, the hostess served icc cream sodas, cookies and nuts. Emeritus Club Accepts Three New Members Three new members have been voted into the Emeritus Club, bringing membership up to 40. The new members, accepted at the November meeting, arc Irvin W. Davis, Beaufort, Otho G. Duke, route 1 Newport, ahd Cecil N. Stroud, Morehcad City. The club met at the civic cen ter. Members will entertain their wives at a Christmas party Mon day night, Dec. IS. Mr. Paul Jones attended a dairy convention at the Hotel Concord, Concord, several daya this week. Army Pays Old Soldier For Trip Made in 1904 Honolulu (AP)? A former mem ber of the Army's 27th Infantry asked the commanding officer for reimbursement for a trip he made from Manila to San Franciico. The Army checked its records and found the claim was accurate. Sure enough, the man had been with the unit. Mrs. Avery told the eighty mem bers how to prepare and arrange several dried arrangements and many ways of using native mater ials in Christmas arrangements. Miss Faye Wallace gave a Thanksgiving devotional. A com mittee was appointed to see about getting a table to use for meet ings in the auditorium. It was an nounced that most of the candy had been given out to be sold. The girls were asked to check lists as to the kind of work they would like to do during the com ing year.
