During the course of his work, Dr. Posner collected data, at least monthly, which included tem peratures, salinities, current mea surements, oxygen, phosphate, ni trate. plankton, and meteorological observations. Most of this work was conducted aboard the institute's research ves sel Machapunga. Whenever need ed, the Croatan, a patrol boat of the NC Division of Commercial Fisheries was made available to Dr. Posner. According to the studies conduct ed by Dr. Posner, the salinity and nutrient content of the water, in 1956 and 1957, as far south as Bookmobile Route Listed Miss Dorothy Avery, director of the county library, has announced the bookmobile schedule (or Mon day and Tuesday. Otway, Mrs. Josephine Lawrence'i _x Englehard depended mainly on the rate of water flow from the Roa noke and Chowan rivers. Very strong winds or heavy rainfall sometimes resulted in abrupt, tem porary, local effects. Dr. Posner found that the waters of the sounds studied are approxi mately three times as rich in nu trients as the highly productive New England waters of Long Is land Sound. Although the waters of the North Carolina sounds arc extremely rich in nutrients, he found that zoo plankton populations (minute ani mals upon which nearly all forms of life depend) are surprisingly small. It is believed that the small zooplankton populations are due, at least in part, to the fact that these small animals are being con stantly preyed upon by a multi tude of small recently spawned fishes (menhaden, anchovies, spot, croaker, flounder, etc.) which uti lize the sounds as nursery grounds. Dr. Peaaer psMs Mt that the Albemarle Sound area, unique in its geographical, chemical, physi cal, ana biological characteristics, must he continually studied in or der to gain a clear conception of the many factors which control biological production within Its waters.
